Are the character files mandatory to download? My computer doesn't have an application that can open them.

The Alucard card file is, I doubt someone could do the first boss with a fresh character. You shouldnt need to open them, just download them then paste them into your terraria character folder.

It would be awesome if you made a mod for this with the bosses from SotN and maybe some weapons and stuff but that would probably be really hard to do.
