Characters in Dark Ages might attempt to kill themselves only if they are Lunatic or Depressed. Any other instances are not Dark Ages related.
As far as the different murder attempts, if you are unable/unwilling to play with such feature there is a rule to disable it. In fact, with close to 30 different rules, Dark Ages can be configured and customized to adapt to anyone's playing style, independent of their skill in the game.
I must've missed that gamerule, thanks for the heads-up. Anyway to change it mid-game? I'm assuming no.
