You can. I've only added subs that I have made to already started games already, and it works, but they wont get updated after you buy it

Once you purchase the submarine from a subvendor that sells it ingame any future updates to the submarine posted by the creator out of game will not be applied to your sub, as it cant be changed once youre using it. You can however update the mod and buy it again, though you will quickly find out the process of transfering items between subs in barotrauma is not the most fun, not to mention itll get expensive, unless you cheat the sub price down when you need to rebuy it for an update.

Incase of bug fixes, cosmetic or functional changes that they make to the submarine itself.

As others have said, yes, once you've activated a custom sub in the mod menu you can then buy it in any new/on-going campaigns. However, keep in mind that you won't be able to purchase Tier 3 subs in-game until you reach the The Great Sea biome (the 4th biome).

Say InitialDesu were to have made a mistake when making the sub. It happens, he's only human. If you were to go buy the sub before he fixed it, you'd continue having the issue, even after he updates it, as the game wont update a sub that you own.

Yeah I’m going to wait for some patches first. The bot AI is having a lot of issues getting around the ship for repairs. Most are stuck in one place while the rest of the ship breaks down.

I don't think ID can fix this. The only thing he can change about AI pathing is waypoints, whitch won't get much better than auto generated ones.
