There are also several mechanisms to make the surviving wargs much (much) less annoying than in whatever version you remember.
IIRC there's an increasing chance of them running away if they're among the very last units to survive.
It's been tweaked repeatedly by different people, I'm sure, with the main goal being for them to be less annoying to deal with once you won.
On the other hand they also got more varied attacks and can now knock units (or the player) off their horses.
