Is it possible to adjust the "walk around/inspect troops" option, so that you can command troops as if they were in battle, in order to experiment with formations and manage your divisions?
That way you can create formation and position templates for your divisions and memorize them with F2>F7 in a calm environment without enemies disrupting....
