COMMON MISTAKES
  1. The drilling rods keep shooting up and down whilst I'm lowering the wellhead.

This is most likely being caused because you're playing on either the "Low" or "Auto" physics setting in the options menu. It's recommended that you play on "High" when you're using ropes, otherwise this is what tends to happen. Sadly this is a core issue with the game itself and is not something that can be easily fixed on our side.

  2. The drilling rods keep slowly popping up out of the connector making it impossible to connect the next rod to it.

This just means that you've not lowered the wellhead down far enough and the weird Stormworks elasticky rope physics are slowly pulling everything back up again.
Just lower the wellhead a little more and then use the top of the drilling mechanism to gently tap the rod that's popping out back down into the connector again and eventually it'll stay there - even if it means temporarily dropping your current drilling rod in order to do so, as you can always just pick it back up again afterwards and carry on as normal.

  3. The drilling rods are all sliding down past the connector and vanishing into the sea.

Congratulations! You've somehow managed to lower the wellhead too quickly and the rods have popped out of the hole on the top, or the wellhead has been damaged and moved out of it's correct position and now all the drilling rods are sliding past it and most likely down onto the seabed below.
Unfortunately you'll need to use an ROV or minisub in order to recover the drilling rods from the sea floor and/or go on a mission to repair the wellhead before starting again.

  4. The wellhead has been damaged.

This can be caused by several things, the wrong physics settings making the ropes freak out, being too ham-fisted with lowering the wellhead or messing around with the drilling mechanism or even by a vehicle or sea monster colliding with the wellhead below.
Thankfully in most cases you can just put on a diving suit and go down and fix it using an underwater welder before coming back up and continuing as normal, alternatively you can use an ROV/Minisub instead if you don't like the idea of swimming around down there, especially if there's sharks around.

  5. I've struck oil but even though the refinery pumps and furnaces are all on, the oil isn't heating past 300'C.

This means that the rig base has either spawned somewhere where it's unusually cold, or more likely you've flooded the refinery tower with too much oil and now it's struggling to heat it all up.
Try reducing or stopping the flow rate of oil into the distillation tower and turning on the diesel furnace as well, if it still doesn't heat up past 300'C then you'll need to pump some of that oil back into the main oil tank and eventually the temperature will begin to rise past 300'C, then it's just a case of making sure that you carefully select the most sensible flow rate.

  6. The crane has suddenly gone weak and/or the drilling rod connector has gone limp and is no longer able to lift anything properly.

This is a well known issue with Stormworks and is likely due to the old game engine not being able to handle a large amount of physics objects (particularly pivots) all in the same area, as a result there's a bug that occurs where all the pivots and hinges start to become weak.
If you have any large or complex vehicles nearby, try moving them more than 2km away from the Alwent South or just despawn them entirely and in most cases that will fix the problem.

  7. I keep on damaging the wellhead, disconnecting and losing my drilling rods and nothing seems to work for me. This addon sucks!

The Alwent South has been thoroughly tested by no less than 3 people, it has over 12k subscribers on the steam workshop, the drilling mechanism itself is virtually identical to the preset land rig that comes with the base game, plus there's several step-by-step guides and even a video posted on how to get everything working.
Whilst I will be the first to admit that the Alwent South is not for everyone, more so as it requires a small amount of technical ability and patience in order to get everything set up and running, but if after checking through all the above you're still somehow not able to get this to work correctly then sorry, but as my esteemed colleague Casserole from our testing team quite aptly put it:

"I suspect their problem lies between their chair and the computer screen".

Which is sad but true as no matter how hard you try, you can never make something completely idiot-proof, just a little more idiot-resistant.

  8. Can I post questions about my own creations in the comments section and chat away to you about random stuff like we're best friends?

No, please don't treat the steam workshop like a messenger app.
Try to keep all comments posted relevant to the creation that's being shown, especially regarding any bugs that may have come about due to any recent patches introduced by the Stormworks developers; anything else should either be sent as a direct message, posted on the appropriate steam message board or via discord.
