Rato's ToG Compatibility Patch & Rebalance

Winchester 1894 barrel
Possible bug in Version 1.20-3230:

The W1895 7.62x54R barrel adaptation modification works, but then I can't load the rifle with 7.62x54mmR ammunition even though it shows that ammunition type after the modification.

Comment/suggestion:

On a separate but related note, I really like the idea of being able to change the caliber of this gun to help keep it relevant past the early game, but I wonder if it would make sense to keep the starting caliber as the .44 used in the Peacemaker revolver and then allow it to be modified to use the .44 Magnum.

It could fill a much-needed role as a low-recoil rifle for low strength mercs and also provide another gun to use the plentiful .44 ammunition besides the Peacemaker (which is really overshadowed by the other pistols because of the 2 AP cost to ♥♥♥♥ it).

Then it could be modified to use the .44 Magnum for more power as you have it set up in its default configuration. This would be like the jump up from a Peacemaker to an Anaconda and would maintain this gun as a pistol caliber carbine.

Going from a pistol cailber .44 Magnum to a full-power rifle cartridge like the 7.62x54mmR feels like a much bigger change than just upgrading it to take a higher power pistol cartridge. I assume that's why you call it the W1895 barrel adaptation, since that's basically converting it into a whole new gun.

If we think of the Peacemaker as a Colt Frontier in .44-40 Winchester, then that would make this rifle more like a Winchester 1892 in .44-40, which was also made in .44 Magnum in modern times (like the real-life Winchester 1894).

Yeah, I think this makes sense, thank you for your suggestion. TBH, this barrel modification was something i created on one of the first iterations of the mod, long before the introduction of the .44 magnum cals. I had even forgot about it lol. Also I am not sure if keeping the peacemaker as .44 special was a good choice from a loot distribution perspective. Maybe I should make all .44 be magnum ammo, but im not sure how this would influence save games already running. Anyways, I will fix/improve this, but as it is on the main mod it will take a bit more time as i am in the middle of some other changes there.
Cheers

Sorry, I should have known that this would be a main mod topic since the Winchester 1894 is a base game weapon.

I see what you mean about having two different .44 cartridges not being worthwhile and just making the original .44 a .44 magnum. That would be consistent with the base game using the .44 in the Anaconda and Desert Eagle. It would also make the Peacemaker more relevant in the early game. With a lower power .44, the Peacemaker is really outclassed by the 9mm semis because of its AP disadvantages as a single action revolver. But with more power per shot, there would be a more interesting trade-off. And you've already fixed the base game's balance problem with the 1894's super high damage, so that's good.

One way to further differentiate between the Peacemaker and the Anaconda if they both use the same ammo (besides the Anaconda's greater modification potential) would be to lower the AP cost for the Anaconda because it's a double action revolver.

Anyway, thanks for your continued dedication to JA3 modding. I'm looking forward to the next update to your main mod.
