[Balance / Suggestion] Giants
Being able to play as a giant is pretty awesome, but I think they need a bit more to balance them out. They look big, imposing, and intimidating. It looks great leading an army of them against others... until the combat begins and they get cut down like wheat.

Heres some of the issues I noticed while playing them...

Third / First Person Views - With the way the armor designs are many of them really affect your ability to see (even in first person mode). With melee weapons its not too bad, but any ranged weapons are quite hard to use due to it. With some of the armors ranged is pretty much impossible because they cover the entire aiming reticle area.

Shield Coverage - Against ranged combatants the giants are complete pincushions. Even with a shield their exposed heads and legs, especially the legs, provide archers with a larger target to hit than a regular sized unshielded human.

Not Enough Health - Their hefty ~33 starting strength is nice and gives them ~80+ health, depending on their level of ironflesh. Its nice compared to any other starting characters, but due to their size and speed they still end up being effectively weaker than non-giants.

Their Weapons - The giant weapons look fantastic. They are well detailed and they really fit with the giants and their armor. But they have a number of issues that makes them underperform compared to other weapons.

The vast majority of the giant weapons have a high reach ranging from ~90 to ~270 with the majority being ~130. Initially this sounds like a good thing, but it doesn't fully play out that way.

Weapons only deal their full damage potential when striking at their maximum reach and since giants are so slow, and essentially always unmounted, they can't manage to keep their distance from their targets. Once the enemy closes in on them its pretty much over.

The issue is further compounded by the fact that large weapons need room to swing or else they can end up "bouncing" off of enemies, friendlies, objects, terrain, etc effecitvely cancelling the attack. If a battle line of giants is in close combat its more or less just them knocking weapons off each other and the enemies until they get themselves killed.

The speed of the weapons is also a big hinderance. Essentially all of the giant weapons have very poor speed stats. I get the idea that giants are these big, powerful, lumbering things... but they already start off with very low agility stats so combined with the low weapon speed they are very slow to swing.

Just in general the performance of the weapons leaves a lot to be desired. They are too unwieldy and slow. The damage they deal isn't much better, and in many cases is actually worse, than comparable speed / reach non-giant weapons. Even if the weapons were high damage the giants would still regularly get screwed over by the speed bonus / penalty mechanic compared to non-giant troops that would be more manevuerable on foot or getting the added speed of a horse behind their attacks.

The only real pro that they have going for them, aside from looks, is that virtually all of their weapons have the "bonus against shields" ability. Unfortunately, even that bonus isn't all that useful as the giant is more likely to have died long before they'll ever have broken through a shield.

My suggestions on how to potentially address some of the above issues....

Give the vast majority of the giant weapons the "can crush through blocks" ability. This will make them stand more of a chance against the more manevuerable non-giant foot or mounted units they will encounter. Even when pressed into heavily at close ranges they will be able to plow straight through the blocking enemies with their attacks. It would make the giant feel a bit more like giants in my opinion as well.

If possible, make the giants weapons be even more effect against shields than the standard "bonus against shields" ability makes them. If shields were shattering fairly regularly from the giants attacks it would make them more effective as well as making them feel a lot more awesomely powerful in combat.

Give them additional health. Either by just flat out giving them extra health somehow or maybe by giving their armor some bonuses to their ironflesh skill.

Boost their athletics skills some. They are huge giants with big strides that roam around on foot all the time. They shouldn't be entirely unable to fall back from a wimpy human. This would also help to make the long weapon reach a bit more manageable without them being some quickly forced into an ineffective attack range which they can't ever escape from.

Consider giving them some larger shields. Not entirely, but just having some options available and some troops equipped with them.

Give the various troop tree tiers some smaller, shorter reach, backup weapons to switch to when the enemy gets in close.

The camera / view issue with the model size and armor sadly isn't one thats likely to be fixable, but if some of the above things were done to make them more capable in melee combat then this could be overlooked. I know its a technical limitation and I'd much rather have a kickass giant race available with some viewing issues than no giant race at all.

Just figured I'd offer my feedback. I don't think giants should be the "be all and end all" in Perisno or anything. I just feel that currently they are a bit lacking as a playable race / army in comparison to the others. Bascially... in my playing I've found that anything I can do with my giant leading an army of 70 other giants I could have accomplished much easier as a solo starting human on a crappy horse with a sword and spear.

These are some great points and suggestions. Definitely gonna look into this. Thanks.
You're welcome. Thanks to you and all the rest for the awesome mod! Perisno is one of my favorites.

I love everything about the giants between their intimidating demeanor, and their combat speech. But the only issue is that in my game Giants are untargetable and since I can't hit them, I can't kill them. Was wondering if there was like a trick and you have to sneak up on them and stab them in the back, but so far nothing seems to be working.
So far I haven't fought against giants as a non-giant yet, but I haven't had any trouble hitting them as a giant.

Only things I can think to ask would be... what race are you? What weapons have you tried (type / reach)? And, were you mounted or on foot?

I am a human. I've tried swords and bows. I've tried mounted, and on foot. Pressing E to kick does make contact, however does 0 damage. I don't quite recall whether charging makes contact. Also the npc's couldn't hit the giant either.
Just went and tested it out against them.

As a dwarf on foot I had no issues hitting the giants using a crossbow, a polearm (around 125 reach), or a hammer (around 80 reach).

As a human mounted / on foot I had no issue hitting the giants using a bow, a sword (around 100 reach) and a pick (around 65 reach).

Likewise my troops had no issues hitting them with either ranged or melee whether mounted or on foot. It was a pretty big slaugther against the giants.

My guess would be that you encountered some kind of glitch or maybe a file is messed up. I'd recommend backing up your saves and then unsubscribing / re-subcribing to the mod.

One idea of mine, is to give the better troops a "charge" ability, when they contact the enemy after certain distance, make the knock down the enemies in the front, like you would with a horse. This could maybe give them an edge considering how most fight on foot.
Thanks for the comment. This topic is a few years old though so its for a much older version of Perisno than is currently available.

I haven't played the giants much in the recent versions of Perisno so I don't know what all may have been done to address the combat weaknesses of the giants compared to the other races. Maybe they are fixed and awesome to play now.

Regardless, I like your idea. it would be neat and fitting if the higher tier giant troops could have something like the "charge" ability of heavy horses where they can just plow right through and over the enemy.
