I've fought against his army a few times in combination with Drachen Reich troops, and I initiated the final battle where we beat his force relatively easily.

I know that I should be getting his sword after beating him, and I have gotten the sword in previous games. Do I have to beat him on the first attempt in order to actually obtain it? Or is there a random chance of getting it each time you destroy his army?
