This did always bother me a bit because AI always constantly raid villages but when the player does it they get punished. On the bright side raiding villages isn't a very good source of income because trading makes more money early game and enterprises/taxes are better late game.

Maybe it was the devs trying to encourage the player to look for better sources of income. It's kind of dumb but not much of a loss.

Or maybe it was just one more asinine idea that wasn't given any real thought before being shoved out the door.

Me getting punished where the AI isn't, feels like the ai is cheating.... more than usual.

sound like CA in total war they cheat like hell on very hard/legendary

companions lent out to other lords of different factions can be recovered if you send away another companion manually. at least thats what worked for me when i lost alindel. recommend saving the game before trying this. Also the obvious downside here is you'll have to look for the companion you sent away.
