[Outdated] Sinking Physics Overhaul 2
DECAFBAD 3 Aug, 2024 @ 3:38pm
Vertically floating but not sinking
3 out of 4 did this, after being struck by torpedes on the front.
2 corvettes and 1 destroyer needed 1 maybe 2 shots from the AA to sink.
1 corvette sunk after being hit slightly on the starboard side.

Detonators were set to MZ

Hello, thanks for the mod! unfortunately it still happen in my playthrough, in this case, the battleship that I sink is not "sinking".

I believe the issue could be resolved with a script that unseals the compartments on a ship once it's crew abandons it, and forces the crew to abandon it once it reaches a certain angle above the water.

there is such mechanism in place. When critical angles are reached all compartments start flooding and the sinking is certain and there is also a chance that the hull will beak by stress.

Some people have reported the ships not sinking. In my tests I have never seen a ship being not sinkable. Sometimes one torpedo is well, simply not enough and it may survive first strike, stay afloat and need more attention. This situation, where a ship manages to stay afloat was not intended to be completely avoided, I don't see that as an "issue" in general. However I agree that sometimes they keep floating in a weird state where one would expect them to sink. I am constantly tuning the parameters to make the sinking process look more convincing.

Could it be an issue where the compartments are sealed and full of trapped air even after the crew has abandoned the ship...?

From this picture here it's hard to tell if the crew has abandoned ship I don't see any lifeboats, but at that angle it would be impossible for the crew to remain on the ship and do anything effective.

From this picture it appears over half the ship is sticking straight up in the air that's a lot of weight being held upright like that.

This should not look like this, I wonder too why force sinking mechanism did not sink it. Did it stay in this position or was it slowly sinking? I never see this in my tests. Is it something that happens often?

I think it happens when the torpedo hits either far forward or far aft and only floods one or two end compartments... Not enough to completely sink the ship, or even sometimes to force the crew to abandon it. It's especially noticeable whenever it doesn't cause a fire on the ship which creates further damage in other compartments.

If you use x140 or higher time compression, when you come out of TC the ship is horizontal and has to go through the process of standing back up again but it still won't sink.

In my case when the torpedo hits the forward or aft, it sinks and the ship hp bar will goes to 0 when the tip of the forward or aft touches the ground and it just going to push that tip until the ship become like the screenshot that we have here.

I don't play with HP bars, but if there aren't life rafts the ship isn't "sinking" yet.

It was DECAFBAD'S screenshot, but I've experienced similar in the North Sea in 100 m deep water.

There is an issue in vanilla when a sinking ship hits the ground before it is completely sank then it may get stuck or cause weird effects like erecting vertically. There is not much I can do to fix the root of the problem, but to avoid ships to behave like this in shallow water there is force sinking mechanism based on angles. When certain angles are exceeded it will initialize sinking by force by flooding all of the internal compartments. This helps to certain degree, but in shallow water it may not be enough to get a ship unstuck that has strike the ground already.

I have updated to new version with some different parameters. Lets see if it becomes better now.

Stayed like that for about an hour, then 1 shot from an AA gun sank it. The crew abandoned the destroyer.

It's like the air was trapped inside the compartment, and as soon as you punch a hole in it it allows the water to Rush in and flood it.

I don't know about that.
