Not sure about cool, but a few ideas:
- an empty vault with nothing in it
- under construction vault with half finished rooms and minable blocks in rooms
- vaults with 'modern' appliances (as in others found the vault and modernized it)
- vaults inhabited by a dozen+ random xenotype ancients
- toxic vault, vault re-purposed for toxic material storage
As for vault layouts:
- a vault with an internal river or lake to mimic self-sustainability
- Cheyenne mountain complex; a long driveway into an enormous mountain vault
- a big single circular vault with a large open centre space and rooms against the outdoor walls
- if at all possible, vaults with open space (eg. to allow a chopper to land in the centre)
Otherwise, I have maps that are suitable for tanks already, and as I said, one of my maps has an air strip.
You might do a prison vault where political prisoners were held, but the records have degraded. If you need more people, do you take the gamble of opening one of the caskets?
Not sure about the possibility of cross-mod interactions, but the Wool series of novels made me think of a vault whose design is self-sufficiency on top of an oil well. I'm thinking including a VCE deepchem deposit and machinery for refinement.
(Running a overmodded run with Redwood on sea ice right now and having blast doing so. Keep up the good work!)
A mechantor vault isn't a bad idea either. I'll add that to the list
