Tropical Thunder [v1.5]
Kyle's Review of "Tropical Thunder" - 3/5
Half-Likable. 3/5 stars.

Tropical Thunder is a reskin of the Half-Life 2 coastal levels that left me wanting more. All sci-fi assets have been removed and the textures and lighting have been changed enough from HL2 to give the campaign a warm atmosphere, but the reused level design just makes everything feel less original and "vacationy" than it should. New locations like a surfboard shop or a seafood restaurant would have helped this mod stand out. That said, I'm glad you at least go through the maps backwards compared to HL2 — it keeps things from getting too stale.

Lots of minor issues stack up, though. Visual pop-in runs rampant because there's not enough fog to cover it up. Sometimes you can get stuck under the water with no way to escape except for slowly drowning. Bot navigation is also generally unpolished.

Still, there aren't many beach campaigns for L4D2, and this mod does have a genuinely fun atmosphere backed up by solid gameplay and pacing. Try it out if you need a vacation!
