ApprovedOwl's Nitpickings - Part 2 (Outro Cutscene)
Part 1: https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/workshop/filedetails/discussion/3360515088/6786456535970117783/

Hello, folks! This time, I am covering the outro cutscene. Once again, I have gone through to highlight differences, although I've tried to be comprehensive there may be other that I have missed. If you want to see the playback side by side yourself, you can use this link: https://viewsync.net/watch?v=Xxa2M4pIaPI&t=465&v=9mGxwb-CfSw&t=435

(Note - it should go without saying, but the purpose of these posts is not to criticise the frankly incredible work that Digsite have done, but to support them in getting the MCC version even closer to the E3 version where possible before their time and attention goes elsewhere)

Comparison Setup
* E3 Demo Footage Source - This E3 demo source is a high quality aspect-ratio corrected upload. I decided not to use Neo Te Aika’s higher quality upload, as in their words, it is a later build than that used at E3 and has differences, however I have used it at points as a higher quality reference.
* MCC Footage Source - This MCC source is played at 480p 30fps, the same as the original demo. This is to account for post processing differences which apparently do not scale accurately as resolution increases.

Sources have been sync’d for side-by-side playback using ViewSync.

The Differences

Reference Image 1[imgur.com]
1. Chief's ghost is much faster in the MCC version, and exits the scene sooner
2. The MCC version appears to be missing lighting that lights up the front of Chief's ghost

Reference Image 2[imgur.com]
1. Chief appears lower and is not framed correctly in the MCC version
2. The glow from the Ghost's side lights and dashboard lighting are not as intense in the MCC version

Reference Image 3[imgur.com]
1. The lighting in is quite different on the Phantom turret closeup between the two versions
2. The Phantom plasma shots glow much less in the MCC version

Reference Image 4[imgur.com]
1. Plasma scorch marks from the Phantom shots are much dimmer and glow less in the MCC version

Reference Image 5[imgur.com]
1. The lighting on the Phantom is completely different between the two versions

Reference Image 6[imgur.com]
1. The plasma impact shots on the sign glow much less and are less intense in the MCC version

Reference Image 7[imgur.com]
1. A number of explosion effects are missing from this sequence in the MCC version from the sign that breaks
2. The texture on the front of the building behind the crashed Phantom is different between the two versions

Reference Image 8[imgur.com]
1. Chief's Ghost movement appears to be less stable in the MCC version, hard to capture in an image but the Ghost rocks more as he comes round the corner as the Phantom explodes

Reference Image 9[imgur.com]
1. Chief appears lower and is not framed correctly in the MCC version

1. Chief appears lower and is not framed correctly in the MCC version

Reference Image 11[imgur.com]
1. The sparks coming from Master Chief's contact with the ground disappear as he gets closer to the camera in the MCC version

Reference Image 12[imgur.com]
1. Master Chief clips through the camera in the MCC version

Reference Image 13[imgur.com]
1. The framing in this shot is quite different between the two versions. In the E3 version, the Brute in the Ghost moves away from the camera, and stays in the same position in the MCC version.

Reference Image 14[imgur.com]
1. The Brute sits lower in the frame. Seems to be a consistent issue with the Ghost shots. Maybe Ghost's float higher in the E3 version?

Reference Image 15[imgur.com]
1. The lens flare from the Ghost impact explosions on the door is horizontal in the E3 version, but angled in MCC

Reference Image 16[imgur.com]
1. Elite drop pod effects are much more visible in the E3 version

Reference Image 17[imgur.com]
1. The lighting is much darker in the MCC version, this seems to be consistent across multiple scenes in this sequence.

1. Sword effects appear to be missing from the Elite's hands

Reference Image 20[imgur.com]
1. The glow from the Elite swords is much dimmer in the MCC version

1. The Halo 2 logo and animation at the end of the sequence is different between the two versions

part of these issues are engine differences. lots of functions in retail halo 2 don't act the same as the halo 1.5 version of the engine that the original demo used. it was a combo of halo 1 and 2 feature sets and a different rendering engine. most of these would require manual fixes and tweaks. a perfect example of particle physics tweaks that had to be done were the sparks when chief slides on the road, the black smoke from the burning cars, and the dust effects from the pelican landing. those three effects i spent quite a few hours working on prior to release and even then they aren't perfect.

the lighting issues are related to the lightmapper in many places halo 1 and halo 2 handle baked lighting quite differently, i had to do a lot of manual fix-ups in order to make the lighting look remotely close to the original. not much as far as shaders, particle effects, and lighting can be directly translated from the original files.
