[Spoilers] Strategy Guide
If you are stuck, here is an overview of how to complete the campaign, as spoiler free as possible:

  • Start this off by taking the mission "Hunt Pirate Fleet". It is available deep in the Xanion region - approximately 20 sectors away from the barrier. You can find this mission quite easily via strategy mode - it will be the one mission with a snowflake icon.
  • These missions are significantly more difficult than the normal missions! Be prepared.
  • These missions assume that the player has multiple ships with heavy defenses against torpedoes.
  • If you are stuck on mission 4, try assigning your ships to defend the allied ship. They will leave the invulernable enemy ship alone. Send off a couple of your other ships to destroy the AWACS when it appears.
  • If you are stuck on mission 6, try pre-loading your ship with sabot or tandem torpedoes before entering the combat area.
  • If you are stuck on mission 7, try equipping a chameleon system from the black market expansion.
  • If you are stuck on mission 9, try equipping a weapon that deals electric-type damage.
  • If you are having too much trouble with any mission, you can always go deeper into the galaxy and then come back with stronger weapons.
  • I designed this campaign assuming the player would use 5-6 ships with around 125k combined firepower. This is doable pre-barrier, if a bit tough.

You can't just bring a bigger ship and shoot your way through mission 7. If you are still stuck even after taking the suggestion above, here are some additional hints:

  • I balanced this mission assuming a player would be using a ship similar to the Medusa - You can get it here
  • The detection range is specifically 10 km for the ships. You usually don't have to worry about the military outpost unless you are particularly unlucky or reckless, but the distance for that is 20 km.
  • Ships will the highlighted in orange if they are less than 20 km from you, and highlighted in red if they are less than 15 km from you.
  • Equipping a Chameleon decreases the detection distance by the advertised amount on the system.
  • Sticking close to Sophie usually works.
  • If nothing else, stay about 20 km away from the freighter and observe the movements of the enemy ships. There's usually a gap in the coverage you can sneak into.
  • If you need to fly away from the freighter to avoid an enemy ship, you can usually get back into range of the freighter before the mission fails. This depends on how agile your ship is.
  • The detection is based on "nearest distance to" the enemy ship, so a smaller ship will be harder for them to detect. You can bring in a smaller ship and then have a large one jump in when the mission phase changes.
  • When Sophie says that the horizon ships know you're here, you don't need to worry about being detected any more - even if a ship detects you the phase change will happen before the ships alert the main outpost and make the mission fail.
