Dead South
Kyle's Review of "Dead South" - 4/5
Underrated vanilla fun. 4/5 stars.

Dead South is surprisingly long for a 3-map campaign, but it's hard to complain about lengthy levels when each one is so good. This mod is a tribute to the American South that takes heavy inspiration from The Parish and The Passing, and it nails the atmosphere with detailed visuals, genuinely fun dialogue and graffiti, and a custom rescue vehicle. It even has Georgia history trivia!

Sure, the level design is full of flat suburban streets, but that simplicity does make it easy to avoid getting lost. If you just want more vanilla L4D2 without any fuss, this mod delivers.

However, a pile-up of small issues kept it from blowing me away — spotty AI navigation, confusing horde events, and so on. Balancing is also inconsistent because early maps have too much first aid, but the gauntlet finale is a difficulty spike with a painful lack of ammo.

Still, I had a good time overall and I think this mod deserves more recognition. Anyone who likes L4D2 will enjoy this.

(And yes, I saw the reference to my campaign Freezing Point and it made me smile.)
