STAR WARS™ Empire at War: Gold Pack

STAR WARS™ Empire at War: Gold Pack

Awakening of the Clone Wars
Game is lagging and unplayable
Helo,
i just started playing the mod, but its lagging really hard and is nearly unplayable for me.
I tried to change different settings, cores, FPS etc. nothing works.
Even in lowest graphic options its still laggy.

Do you have any tips or ideas, how i can fix it?

I have a Ryzen AMD5 3400G
Nvidia RTX 3060
32 GB Dual Channel DDR 4

Hello there :)

You need a CPU with strong single-core performance for this game. Try google "eaw lagging" and spend some time going through the discussions and YT videos you find there and try out some things that may help.

If nothing helps, your CPU single-core performance may just be too weak unfortunately.

First thing I would try is to toggle the HW mouse accelaration settings in the game options to see if that helps.

Um.... the game is 20 years old and the mods add some fat, yes, but not as much as recent AAA titles. Mid-range hardware from the last 5 years should be able to run modded EAW just fine.

Nah. I run this mod on a i7 3770k just fine. This CPU is nearly 20 years old!

It can be a complex issue as other things like personal playstyle and AI behavior plays in and whether some other background processes use same core as the game does, perhaps with higher priority than the game itself.

If e.g. you have a habit of building many many trade ships that may well tank the CPU performance, same thing if the AI happens to go berzerk in a particular game which happens sometimes (e.g. builds a crazy amount of smaller ships and ponders alot where to send those next).

Which is why I recommended a google search where all such things are discussed.

But again, yes game is CPU bound and can only use a single core. Meaning that an ancient CPU may be better at running the game than a new modern one. Which is why most tweaks aim to boost single-core performance.

That said, the mouse thing is a likely cause in this case I believe, but again, need to try different things if that easy tweak does not help.

Check if changing the settings for Hardware Mouse thingy is on. If i remember right, this would cause a lot of lag for some reaon.

That was the first thing i read and made. it helped a bit, but not in a way, that the game is playable for me.
Personal experience has shown me molchåmor is right...the AI causes the most lag and what I do sometimes if its really bad is reload a save and just go insane on it trying to delete as many fleets as I can...that usually fixes it atleast for me.
Sorry should have emphasized deleting AI fleets* I just suicide charge them to reduce their numbers.
cough cough bad computer cough cough. What i didn't say anything!

You should perhaps read ^^ first, an older PC may actually run this game better. I run it in winxp compatibility mode btw.
