Tips for Full Wilderness Start
Current best way to start with this mod in a full wilderness scenario (things may change in future, and new items could be added):

1. Forage (or right click the tiles) for stones, tree branches and at least one log.
2. Kill some zombies and rip their clothing to get few ripped sheets (any material).
3. Craft Homemade Garden Saw (2 tree branches, 2 stones, 2 rags).
4. Saw your log to get planks.
5. Craft Homemade Wooden Mallet (1 plank, 1 stone, 1 rag).
6. You are able to craft now Homemade Trowel, Homemade Hacksaw, Homemade Pickaxe from Rags/from Rope, Homemade Bucket from Log. Choose what you need.
7. You can collect more logs by hitting trees manually with Homemade Pickaxe.
8. Use recipe "Train Maintenance" to level up to at least Maintenance level 1 (level 0 is hell). This recipe requires 1 tree branch, 2 stones and 1 ripped sheets (any material), but only ripped sheets are removed - you will keep your tree branch and stones.
9. Use newly added recipes in the mod to train knapping, carpentry or carving.
10. Continue accordingly to your goals and have fun!

I'm really hoping you can't use a pickaxe to cut down trees. But you can make a stone axe once you have Maintenance 1 and a chopping block.

With homemade pickaxe you cant cut the trees by right clicking, but you can still damage them by manual attack and receive logs this way. It works the same for the vanilla pickaxes (forged and looted ones). You can disable it by changing value TreeDamage to 0 (for item HomemadePickaxe), in the file "\SteamLibrary\steamapps\workshop\content\108600\3391325510\mods\HomemadeThings\42\media\scripts\hmt_items.txt".

I would recommend attacking trees manually anyway, because right click cut is bugged in vanilla and it rolls the lowering condition chance twice instead of just once (not sure if its fixed yet).

As for the homemade pickaxe, ive set the TreeDamage lower than vanilla pickaxes, and the condition lowering chance is higher, so it doesnt seem too overpowered. I would like to leave the TreeDamage as is, because main purpose for this mod was to make gameplay on low skill levels less grindy - not really focusing on hyper realism. But feel free to change the value, as i mentioned previously.

And you mentioned stone axe with maintenance 1 and a chopping block - but yeah, its still the issue of grinding Maintenance 1, which is extremely slow and annoying now in vanilla on level 0.
looks like the developer didn't add the ability to mine iron in the full Wilderness, you have to go out into the city and search for iron components anyway. Is this true or am I missing something?

Hey, sorry for the late response. Seems like its possible now, with the latest update to zomboid, to process foraged iron ores. Although i wasnt able to check it myself yet.
