Left 4 Dead 2

Left 4 Dead 2

Vox Aeterna [v1.7]
Campaign overview
A mostly enjoyable and memorable map for aspects of its atmosphere, particularly with regards to some gorgeous lighting and a backdrop that nails that sense of the otherworldly. Some of the hazards dabble in certain unsurprising tropes, though this is at least done to a tasteful degree that doesn't become trite and turn the game into a full-fledged platformer. Navigating the reasonably perilous terrain in general is effective at keeping you on your toes without diverting your focus too much from the threat of the Infected.

What I didn't care for:

Chapter 3 comprising of Dust2 really ruined the sense of immersion right there and then; and to top it off, this section isn't really aesthetically pleasing at all, certainly in comparison to the majority of the map.

Incoming vehicles as a built-in hazard for the finale; this is definitely a touch tacky, and certainly not creative. It also looks daft to see survivors flying up in the air upon collision with the vehicles.

More of a nitpick here, as I realise this is an optional feature, but the music that comes with the supplementary Add-on actually cheapens the overall feel for me, as it's just too 'cinema' and too distinct in terms of its association with the source material, despite the fact that it's otherwise fitting for the setting. My preference is for the Egyptian themed tracks from the OST of Unreal Tournament 2004, which I went and looked up in the end whilst in-game for that rounded-out auditory experience.

3.5 / 5. Worth revisiting, but presently falls quite a bit short of its potential.
