Im trying to get guns to work, but it always seems like i would be better off if i switched to bows only.

Sure their dmg is great, but they miss half their shot and take ages to reload. Not even taking into account that sometimes their croucing gets stuck and they dont do anything for a while.

"Maybe cavalry guns might be better?" I thought - They miss even more shots even against masses of infantry. I watched like 10 minutes of fast forward of 5 cavalry guns trying to kill 30 infantry, they ran out of ammo before they could kill half of them.

Isnt guns supposed to be strong? They neither have the range nor accuracy advantage, maybe only useful as a heavy cav charge counter. But I think overall you might be more succesful if you just stuck with bows.

Even in custom battle, with the same number of guns vs bows with similar skill, the bows always win. If you increase the battle size overall, the bows completely wipe the floor with the gunners.
