Left 4 Dead 2

Left 4 Dead 2

Fatal Freight: Remastered (1/7)
Kyle's Review of "Fatal Freight" - 5/5
Might as well be an official campaign. 5/5 stars.

Fatal Freight has to be the most underrated L4D2 campaign I've ever played. I never hear people talk about it or bring it up in lists of the best custom campaigns, but it's oozing quality from start to finish. With some minor cleanup, it could be added to the game officially and no one would question it.

The level design is superb -- satisfying to explore, but easy to navigate. It also captures the beauty of the northern United States perfectly thanks to gorgeously detailed art design. The campaign is pretty vanilla overall, but I don't consider that a flaw because it's so refreshing to play a new 5-map campaign that matches (and sometimes exceeds) Valve's standards.

My only gripes are that the custom music doesn't play for me and the Workshop version is unfortunately 7 parts. Anything else is nitpicking, though. If you have the space, keep this campaign installed at all times. As a mapper myself, I've never been more jealous!

It really does feel like a vanilla campaign, one of my favourites!

Hey I just saw this today and I wanted to say thanks for the kind words!

I'm very happy to see that people appreciate the campaign for what it was intended to be: something that feels like it fits in with the official maps. I've gotten many comments over the years about the bland nature of the maps and how they don't compare to some of the more popular L4D2 campaigns in terms of innovation and originality. Though I've always agreed with the argument as-is, crazy innovation was never the intention with FF in the first place.

I've always prided the campaign on solid design, good optimization, and overall polish as opposed to having new and unique panic events, mechanics, environments, etc (often times these kinds of things don't work very well with L4D's gameplay loop).

I've come to realize that that's not what most players are looking for in a map though, which is okay honestly. It does make me feel really good though to see that some appreciate it the same way I do.

And by the way, the reason there are 7 parts now is due to the massive filesize of the campaign and the fact that the workshop has such strict filesize limits for uploads. Since I HD-ified all the textures, the campaign grew about 1 GB in total filesize. Fortunately, I've been informed of a way to get around this, but I've just been really busy with my personal life and haven't gotten around to it. I'll get back to it at some point in the near future I hope.

I was like 95% sure that the campaign is 7 parts because of the hi-res textures. I didn't know there's a way around it, though. When the time comes, good luck!

And as a mapper myself, I fully respect the intention to show restraint. I've played a lot of custom campaigns over the years, and I am in 100% agreement that not all gameplay gimmicks work with Left 4 Dead's core formula. I wish more people realized that.
