Adding $basetexture leaves a INVALID ROOT ELEMENT warning.

Heavy texture don't work

When I turn the spy's mask to black and use face posing the mouth area turns red.

I have problems with changing spys head to black

For some reason the $basetexture command doesn't work for me

I loaded an HWM engineer then followed the steps but then when I add a $basetexture command it turns the model entirely black and when I substitute the name in the data collumn it just turns the black parts black and purple.

Help??

Your only halfway there. Beside the $basetexture command in the data column, you type in the path and name of the skin vtf filename you want to replace it with.
