the paid content idea is a BS, game publishers/developers decide the amount of revenue they take from mods, and after publishers/developers take what they want, valve take another 50%

so in the skyrim case, bethesda decide to take 50%, and valve cut another 50% from the remain
at the end modder get only 25% of the total income.

Besides that, modder need to earn 400+ dollars before getting a cent.

better put a donate button rather than that, at least the modder can get most of the donation

Honestly did not know they were doing a charge for mods thing. I never really got too into Skyrim as it was, I would just roam around, screw around, take junk items to the top of the mountain and laugh as I watched it roll down aimlessly. Not unlike what I did in fallout. But I did not really do this mod for the purposes of making money. Or fame. Wanna know why?

When I was a little Altroth I would come home from school and play Homeworld. The first one. I adored the game. I loved space. I loved when the Taiidan Cruisers would go "Heavy Cruiser clear and under own power" as they left the bay. But I always hated that you could only play 2 of the 4-5 races you saw in HW1. But, again, I was little. Modding a game was waaay below me.

Ditto Homeworld Cat, though maybe not so much HW2. I prolly had the power then to at least take a swing at it, though I guess I lacked the desire. Regardless, I was annoyed HW2 did not even so much as touch up on any of the races introduced in HW1/Cat. You hear nothing of the Turanic Raiders, the Taiidan Republic, or of the "Council" introduced at the end of HW1.

So when this came out, I went "You know what? I am going to make a mod! I want to play as the Turanic Raiders." I did not go looking to see if anyone else had done it, I wanted to do it myself with as little outside help as possible. And uhh it kinda grew up from that somehow.

That said, if someone does charge for a mod, well that is their biz I guess. I grew up with modders making mods on their free time with the goal of sharing their enjoyment of the game with others for no charge.

If anything I would incorporated a donate for tacos button on the page. Because, hey, free tacos. Who is going to say no to free tacos? No one, that is who.

All hail the mighty tacos, thank you for the reply.

Much respect, Altroth, and well said! Plus, free tacos; never enough of them when you need 'em ;)

To be clear, I (like most geeks) would not mind a job doing this sorta thing. But this is not a job, this is a fun hobby. Also I totally wanted tacos for lunch because of that. Which sucks cuz the only good tacos places are a good hour drive from here. Why has no one developed an instant teleporter yet?
Starwolf1991 24 Apr, 2015 @ 12:24pm
If there was an instant teleporter, I'd get free pizza sent through it anyday of the week.

With the new option to set prices for workshop mods, I'd love to send you a couple dollars for all the incredible work you've done here. Your mod has easily given me an extra dozen hours of fun. Make it "pay what you will" and let us send you money!

Looks like the whole premium mod thing lasted just a few days before it was screamed to death by the masses. I had a hard time believing that Valve was taking 75% (!!!!) of the profit but damn, apparently they were totally doing that. From what I read of their official post they are not promising to never return it, but, I am betting it is unlikely to show up anytime soon.

I kind of enjoyed Raiders Ascendant for Homeworld which replaced the Taiidan with the Turanics
