Quest walkthrough
The following describes how to solve the quest. To start the quest simply wait until the courier hands you a letter from the Jarl of Witherun. A dialogue will pop up asking you wheather you want to do the quest or not. If you choose to skip it, enjoy the castle! If not, here is complete solution for the quest:

  1. Activate the quest in your journal.

  2. Read the letter named 'Castle Gonduin'.

  3. Fast travel to Riverwood and follow the road leading in the mountains towards Helgen. You should be able to see the castle from Riverwood.

  4. Walk through the ruins of the castle to the inner part. The portcullis will close right in front of you. Turn around and open the portcullis of the Helgen gate with the pull chain beside it. Inside the of the archway you will be teleported to a dark castle. Enter the castle through the wooden door and follow the path. Use the horn to teleport back to Tamriel.

  5. Back in Castle Gonduin follow the road until you reach a short bridge. Jump in the water and enter 'Castle Gonduin Cavern' to your right.

  6. Jump into the water and you will see a underwater tunnel leading away from the first cave room. Dive into this tunnel. You will again teleported to sewer tunnel this time. Walk towards the Draugr. You will be teleported back just before reaching the creature.

  7. Follow the tunnel to the next room and exit the water. You have to open the drawbridge now. The pull chain to activate it is located in the control room to your right.

  8. Once the drawbridge is lowered cross it and search the last left room for a dead adventurer. Watch out for the traps! Loot the adventurers body and take the key and his journal.

  9. Read the 'Adventurers Journal' you just took.

  10. Exit the room and follow the hallway. Use the key to open the closed door. Open the wooden portcullis at the end of the hallway and go upstairs. Enter 'Castle Gonduin Gate House'.

  11. Kill the spiders in the tower and go upstairs. The stairs are behind the spider web. Destroy the spiderweb at the top of the ladder with your weapon. Ignore the iron gate at the 1st floor. There's nothing special behind it. Defeat the large spider at the top floor and exit the tower through the wooden door.

  12. You are now in the inner part of the castle. Turn left and go downstairs. You can now open the portcullis of the inner castle or go straight into the throne hall.

  13. You should save your game now. The ghost is very strong. Inside the throne hall walk through the large double door. A fire will start all around you and a strong wraith will appear. Kill the wraith and take the 'Cursed Amulet' from his ashes.

  14. Go back to the gate tower where you entered the inner part of the castle. Use the trapdoor to reach the top of the tower. You will now see a wooden staircase on your right side. Take the stairs and use the fire bowl at the top.

  15. Congratulations! You lifted the curse! Now you have to rebuild the castle. Go back into the throne hall and talk to the 'Steward Balin'. If you can't find him or the dialogue options are not visible, try fast traveling to Whiterun and back or restart your game.

Uhmm, is there a way to finish the quest when you defeated the wraith before the quest was even at that point?

Try this:
  1. Open console with the ^ key.
  2. Type in the command: "setstage castlegonduin_curse 90".
  3. Burn the amulet as described in Step 14.
  4. Go back into the main hall. If there is no fire but a manager npc, then it worked. Otherwise you have to reload an old save or remove this mod from your save.

To remove this mod from a saved game do the following:
  1. Desubscribe.
  2. Delete "Castle Riverwood.esp" and "Castle Riverwood.bsa" in your Skyrim Data folder if they weren't deleted automatically.
  3. Load the game and create a new save.
  4. Subscribe again.
  5. Load your new save and wait for the courier.
  6. Do what the quest tells you to do.

yeah so i got to the portcullis, it told me to find a new way around. a quick look and i saw the battlements collapsed to the right of the bridge, wasnt difficult to make my way to it by jumping on the ledge. got to the inner gate no problem. unlocked teh gate and ran inside. killed the wraith. didnt know what to do now. looked at quest. it still wants me to unlock the main gate..WUT? looked at walk through. turns out there was a secret way in that there was literally no way to find throug hluck. id have tried to jump over the wall before i tried leaving the entire castle all together and looking in the water for an easily missable hole . anyway so i closed teh gate and went to do it your way. found the poorly written journel and had a giggle when the adventurer told me how she found the way in." most castles have an escape passage incase its attacked"
"yes" i thought" but not a single castle in this game has had that so far so its abit weird to assume we would know this too without even ahint the city was beseiged or it had a secret entrance" ♥♥♥♥ it. go that way. but the wraith already being dead means it wont carry on now either. so what. do i uninstall? probably. still wanted to post the dumb logical process

  1. I am sorry for the "poorly written journel". English is not my first language.
  2. In fact many vanilla dungeons have secret passages. Furthermore I never had the intention of designing a castle that is like every other existing in the game.
  3. To resolve this issue try the steps I mentioned a few comments earlier.

Castle steward doesn't say anthing to me also. Will try resarting.

Wraith fight: I jumped up onto the table and he just stood in the fire taking damage until he died.

Interesting scenes after the teleporting. Do we ever fing out what they mean? The dead adventurer mentioned some books he found, but I never saw them.

I'm doing the quest now and I don't know what part of helgen ur talking about but I killed the spiders and I'm not inside any castle it takes me out to where I burn the amulet

Hello, I’m having a weird issue with the castle.

The entrance to the Castle Gonduin Throne Hall is blocked by terrain. There’s a giant hill that goes from the portcullis up to the top of the throne hall doors. The only way for me to access them is to tcl through the hill.

I’m trying to figure out whether I missed a quest step somewhere, there’s another mod that changed the terrain (there shouldn’t be, I didn’t install anything else in this area), or if it’s just a fluke with my game. In the castle grounds next to the entrance to the throne hall is a tomb called Virserik that houses three Dragonborne Draugr... were these a part of your mod?

Thats 100% a mod conflict. I didn't add the tomb, so maybe thats your conflicting mod.

question so even i dont do the quest will i still have access to the castle?
