Version 1.1 - Concept Board
The next update v.1.1 will contain a purchase quest. The basic idea is that when you first visit the castle it will look like a rundown fort ruin with crumbled walls, dead treas and cobwebs everywhere. After defeating some enemies you will have to rebuild the castle. You can repair the walls, hire guards and merchants. After investing in the castle it will give you an income from the shops and the mine.

Quest
The quest will start with a letter you receive from the jarl of witherun. He gives you the castle as a reward for your services. Problem is that the castle is haunted and fallen into ruin long ago. So the quest will be in short: Clear it from monsters and rebuilt it.

Current purchasing ideas:
After successfully killing every foe you can buy the following upgrades/repairs for the castle:
  • Rebuild the castle
The castle wont be in good condition when you first visit it, but you can repair it. With this purchase you can repair all crumbled walls, towers and buildings. This will be the most expensive part of the rebuilding.

  • Take the forge back into operation
You can take the forge back into operation after you have rebuilt the castle. When you hire a blacksmith you can ask him to forge new armors for your guards. Furthermore you can buy crafting supplies from him. The forge will give you an income after you reopened it.

  • Take the alchemy store back into operation
An alchemist will open a store where you can buy alchemy stuff. Like the forge the alchemy store will give you an income after you reopened it.

  • Take the tavern back into operation
You can renovate the tavern so your guards will have a place to drink in the evening. The tavern increases the income from other shops because it attracts travelers.

  • Take the mine back into operation
The entrance to the mine is blocked by a lot of rubble. After this purchase you can enter it to clear it from any monster that might still live in there. When the mine is save you can hire miners to work in it. The miners will produce an income in form of ores that you can collect.

  • Hire guards
If you want some guards to protect your castle you can hire some.

  • Rebuild the player house
This will basically work similar as the vanilla player houses. You can buy furniture for your home, divided into bedroom, library, alchemy and enchanting room, office, treasury, display cases, dinning room, wine cellar, kitchen, throne hall, servant rooms...

  • ...

I don't know when I will come to adding all this but I don't think the update will come this summer. If you have ideas related to the purchasing system you can post them below.

I think this is wonderful. Hearthfire really could have used something less generic. If this castle could be improved and built from the ground up/ruins I will totally even use it as my primary dwelling. It definitely gives a sense of accomplishment and invests the player into the location.

Abwarten ;-)
Das Ganze mit der Quest und dem Wiederaufbau ist noch lange nicht fertig und wird es auch nicht vor September.

I think that a quest is a great idea. And that it could be even better if it tied to the main story line like if maybe its an ancient castle that has housed all the previous dragonbornes and you dont get the quest until after the grey beards name you dragonborne a courier brings a letter from angeir saying to go to the location of the castle and learn of the secrets past or something like that would be really cool.

That goes pretty much in the direction what I am trying to implement currently. After killing the Dragon in Witherun the jarl sends you a letter that tells you of a haunted stronghold that has fallen into ruin. After lifting the curse that lays on it you can rebuild it step by step.

@Caveman1514 so what?
DarthDonut  [developer] 28 Jul, 2015 @ 12:36am
If people want to cheat let them. In my opinion a price around 50,000 gold is justified for a castle. The most expensive vanilla house costs around 30,000 i think. Maybe the 10,000 for rebuilding the walls are a bit to much though...

Great looking concept dude, you should do something like a recruiting system for workers and guards etc, just a suggestion

I thought about that to. But in this case there would be just to many purchasing options with many dependencies within them. Therefore I decided to combine recruiting and rebuilding. Purchase the barracks and you will although get the guards, forge and blacksmith and so on. Plain and simple.

Perhaps what you could do to keep it interesting is that bandits can overrun the castle and will attack. That means if you spend too long without checking back on the guards/ your guards are too weak you will get a letter stating you have to reclaim your castle from them.
