FAQ on Roles
Q) What are Roles?

A) Roles are specialisations for your characters, akin to reaching a new tier after levelling. You will find new Powers have been unlocked and you are provided with two options to explore: A or B. When you have chosen which direction you want to take your character, take the relevant notecards from the bag and replace your current Powers card with them.

Q) Okay, I've chosen my Role. What do I do with Powers I've already learned?

A) They stay with you! You have earned 3 Power feats before the end of Adventure 3 and you get another one after you have chosen your Role. When you replace your Powers card with the Role cards, tick the three boxes you had on your Powers card, and then tick any other one. You can even tick a brand new Power from your new Role!

Q) Can I take Powers from both Roles?

A) No. When you choose your Role, you are also choosing not to take the other one. However, there is a fair degree of overlap between the two paths, so you may find similar (if not exactly the same) Powers on both sides of the Role card.

Q) What do I do with my old Powers card?

A) Once you've marked all three of your existing Power feat ticks on your Role cards, there is no longer any use for the old Powers card - feel free to delete it from the game.

Q) Can you explain the boxes in brackets? Why are some separated by semicolons?

A) The boxes in brackets are not unlocked by default - they require a Power feat tick to unlock. The effects in brackets merely add more strength to existing Powers. Boxes separated by semicolons mean you must have unlocked the previous one in the sequence to unlock this new stage of the Power.

Q) So if the Powers in brackets are sequential, are the +1, +2 etc. modifiers cumulative?

A) Nice try! No, the highest numerical modifier replaces the lower one. Just like Skills, a Power which has d10 (+1, +2) ticked up to +2 only gives you a bonus +2, not both the +1 and +2.

Q) What about non-numerical modifiers in sequence?

A) Non-numerical modifiers are just there to give extra strengths. You have to activate the Powers in order, but you then get to pick and choose whether they are active or not when you use your Power to make a check. Also, non-numerical modifier never replace + modifiers, they are always in addition.

Q) There are differences between the original card and your notation on the notecard!

A) Well spotted. There are differences, but they are merely editorial decisions on my part - often to save space, but also for clarity. The information stored on the original card and the notecards are exactly the same in function.

Q) Why can I not tick the boxes on the notecards? Where can I get ticked boxes for the notecards?

A) The boxes aren't functional, they are just characters like normal letters. You will have to find a ticked box and replace the unticked box via copy/paste methods. The same is true for the adventure path checklist in the notepad - just replace the unticked boxes with ticked ones you have copied.

If you have any more questions on Roles, please post your question here. Chances are if you're not familiar with the game, someone else might have the same question as you!

Do you start with a role at the start of the game?

No, you gain a role as the reward for completing Adventure 3.
