A few points I'd like to address.
1. The best way to start the game is by farming a certain area until you're level 27-30 before starting the storm spirit quests. The two best spots are the fishies and the spiders. If you go fishies you can alternate fishies and treants to maximize your time and virtue.
The only character that can efficiently farm spiders is Phoebe, but everyone except morrow can go fishies with some success. You can sell the drops you get, or turn in pearls for virtue if you go fishies, and with some luck you can level your weapon up to +10 before you even start the quests.
The reason for waiting until level 30 is because warlock won't talk to you until then, so you can try to double up your boss kills so you aren't waiting on respawns as much. Having the +10 weapon makes it so you aren't struggling against any of the early bosses like Snow Demon King.
2. You shouldn't be having trouble getting your third skill as soon as possible. If you've lined up warlock and storm spirit quests, you should be able to immediately kill them in the order they've been given. Again, the +10 weapon makes this easy. Tortoise can be a bit difficult, especially if you're melee, but you can just blink to the treants immediately after he does his splash to heal, then blink back and continue damaging him.
The best set available during this period is the penta-ghost shoes+robe. If you level the robe up to +7 you'll have an easy time killing tortoise guaranteed.
3. The class set isn't entirely necessary. I've killed Buddha with the penta ghost set on impossible as phoebe and foxy. If you're melee and not playing cloud, you need to be able to tank more than deal damage, and the class set isn't good for that. Cloud is an exception due to his insanely high damage and CC during his spells.
4. Mastery trinkets are better than anything else. The Yen Yang is best in slot, magic omniscience is good for second slot. If you're having a bad time with drops you can try killing Emperor Jun for the poor man's magic omniscience (star pendant I think?)
The forge item that gives a movespeed slow on attack is really good for killing the Saints. Their hitboxes are terrible and can get you killed trying to kite around them.
5. The level 25 forge weapon can be a frustrating to get if the drops are bad. You can manage with the level 12 bow that you can buy with points if it isn't going well.
6. Finally, virtue isn't too terrible. If you try my starting strategy of farming to level 30, which can be done quite quickly, you'll be in the ballpark to break the 800 virtue wall.
As for dedicated servers, that would require the mapmakers to clean up their code and fix the memory leak. Seeing as how there hasn't been any significant updates to the game in a long while, I'm not holding out hope. Maybe we'll see some improvements in the future.
Also, if you are pretty experienced, Phoebe is a must have in your team, because she can solo def waves with phoenix (she can get level 15 before first wave), while her first skill is deadly at very close range. AND, by defending solo, she can get the +12 weapon by wave 8-9, can't remember. As for when using the stop wave early on, you can summon phoenix at the treant spawn, to farm a good amount of virtue, and getting a nice boost in your hero's hp regeneration, since phoenix kills works the same way as hero killing creeps; 15 treant kills = instant full hp.
You should be really overpowered at least half the game, kill 4-5 pairs of creeps of the wave, summon phoenix and you are free to go back to your quests. Farm the bosses that drop components of the +25 weapon always when it is possible, but you need to be efficient, I usually have a level 10 weapon (+3 or +5) and a level 10 penta ghost by the time warlock gives me the 3rd skill quest. From that time on, I suggest getting level 10 on the +12 weapon, and after only on your end game gear, judge as you play and check the randomized sets that were rolled for your game (fixed sets mode have randomized ones too).
Play with fog on, and restart Dota 2 before every single RoC that you'll start, preventing some of the crashes. As for a last tip, use your courier to scout where the wave is, just keep it some distance below your throne, works very well with 2 players.
