My first suggestion:

Based on what you mentioned earlier regarding having lost the original model files for the Orbital Beam Laser, I would suggest making it an energy only weapon that has a high power drain.
In the "Energy Weapons" MOD, the laser turret only drains power when firing, and can only fire for a certain period of time before having to stop firing in order to cooldown for a period.

If you were to use a similar mechanic specifically for the Orbital Laser, then you could continue to use the existing model that you currently have, and not require any conveyor doors or assembler recipes for ammunition.

Another suggestion for the Orbital Beam Laser:
As I recall, your intention for this weapon is to allow it to fire from extreme range.
Now that it's possible to MOD the GUI elements, you could have a couple of additional features:
  • A slider that allows the user to set the maximum range (and as a consequence the amount of power required to fire).
  • Perhaps 3 RGB sliders (values 0 to 255) to adjust the color of the beam.

I have a suggestion or two for the mod, Orbital technology (suggested title) and possibly if you werent already planning to do so, you should add in a custom nuke like explosion effect and have the bomb do damage over time as if the explosion lasts a few seconds or so. anyways i love the mod already and hope your plans work out as well as they can.
