Question about the well

Does this one have to be connected to the water to work? I know it's a silly question but was hoping it was like the water well mod that allows you to place anywhere and it always has water in (not cause it rained).

I honestly cant remember if I made it self watering or not. I know I had it self watering initially but there were many desires to need rain. I cant remember if I made it require rain/ intake completely or just slowed the auto fill
