Adam and Eve start with just the very basic little amount of fuel, food, tools and clothes. They have no seeds or cattle, so if you build a field, you simply have nothing to plant in it.

I'd recommend starting with a house and a gathering hut, then a small woodcutter, to get the very basic survival stuff before the first winter. Don't go crazy on the clearing by selecting a large area to get the first resources needed for building. Get just what you need for those few things, and then clear more as required for whatever you need next.

Um, I too am having this issue, but I cannot seem to get the seeds for planting... I get plenty of food for 2 people atm, but I'd still like to start a farm for the future. Not quite sure if I am doing something wrong or not.

Planting requires actual seeds. As far as I know (granted, I just started playing yesterday), the only way to obtain seeds, if you didn't start on Easy or Medium, is to trade.

Seeds come from merchants. Build a trading dock if you want seeds for fields or orcharts. Animals come from the merchants as well.

Seeds come from plants, duh!

This is in my opinion a big downside of this game. I mean IRL potatoes for instance are equal to seeds. But IRL you would also have to swap crops so... yeah.

As for first food sourse I recommend hunting rather then gathering. It gives you lether and fethers, for clothing. As for tool and cloth making dock workshop is a good idea.
