Patch 254 / Tek Tier Update aka The Future

It's here! The Tek Tier Update has come. Yay!

I admit, the new stuff gets you quite some superpowers. I just read quite a bit of the news. However, how should I go on with my beacon mod?

I just feel like I .. want to talk.

To publish my (old) newest plans I had so far:
* nerf overworld beacons to eg maximum quality 10
* increase bp chance to 50%
* make bps independent from itemsets (which means equal chance for each bp)

My (old) plans for underwater beacons:
* 2 fully crafted items and 2 bps
* quality ranges from 5 to 15 (or something close to that).

However, with all the new end-game stuff, I also should make some thoughts about how to handle that. The Tek Replicator also is capable of carrying far more stuff than most crafting stations before, so you can craft highest level bps from now on...

For example, let's increase the steps in which beacon levels increase to 20...
Green -> stays 15, Blue -> 35, Purple -> 55, Yellow -> 75, Red -> 95. No good idea, I guess. I think the (overworld) beacons can remain with this system, and receive the changes above.

However, my main goal is to provide a beacon mod which in average is accepted as mod dropping nice, but not too nice items. I enjoy improving my english by talking to you (it's not my mother tongue) and making the mod (even if the editor is a pain in the *cough*)

My current thoughts / questions:
* I can't get it out of my head, Ascendant stuff might be op in overworld beacons. I feel like no one can tell me it's actually not like that. I can understand though why most of you might be fine with that.
* What about Tek stuff in underwater beacons? I have no idea how rare or hard they're to farm and whether it would be reasonable.

I added options to modify for you! All bp qualities should be modifiable through the file GameUserSettings.ini (sometimes referred to as GUS.ini)!

Here's how (quick overview, ask Google if you need help):
* Find the file on your server or for singleplayer locally
* add the Following section to the bottom of the file: [BeaconPlus]
* add all (or some of) the following options below that section:

* for each equal sign ("=" in english), type a floating point decimal (e.g. 10.0) directly behind it (one example would be WhiteMinQuality=6.9). Done!
* Note: restart the server or your game after changing variables in the INI!

* Note that this feature is not fully tested. From what I've seen, if an option is missing, it will be set to zero.
* Leave a comment if you like.
* I'll leave those features for one week from now on (Sunday 5th) and see how it works out. Or whether it doesn't at all.
* I know there are some issues that suck. I got some ideas, however. :)

To Clarify, I have a Question:
Can you ADD a new color? (Silver, Gold, or Polychromatic colored stream, Level 120+, Drops TEK bits and bobs)

Level 120+? You can only get to level 105 so far (unless you up player levels in the settings)...

I thought about that as well. However, that might be very difficult and would be different from what I did here - the mod only overrides the existing beacons.

Where/how to spawn them would be another question.

It should be possible, though, of course. Don't quote me on that.

Actually, maybe you can do something with the doubles - you know, there are two versions of each beacon color - a normal one and (those are very obvious on SE) doubles, which spawn more or more powerful loot (in this mod, only more). That may become an idea as well.

Another three patches... but I won't complain.

One thing I want to note: this Element (kinda uncreative name imo) only drops from bosses --- dropping it in beacons which are relatively easily accessible would be an absurdity. Underwater crates might be reasonable, but still you need those Tekgrams.

Do you see a possibility to adjust the item sets manually like it worked with raw beacons?
Or may a option to add own sets?

Yeah, I agree about not making element accessible from beacons. That would be a pretty massive balance issue. I hope that they fix the inability for those of us, on The Center, to get most of the Tekgrams, though. That's rather annoying.

Edit: (Maybe in extremely small amounts -- less than 3-5. The stuff does decay, but there's a reason it's hard to get.)

It spoils? Didn't notice that, thanks for mentioning. I planned to put it in underwater beacons actually. Small amounts should suffice, I also think so

At least some of these patches were good ones (spoil timer on element was silly and the decay of the tek-gear too fast). Don't expect them to stop patching ,because I read something on the official forum that there's at least one more incoming in the near future... :-D BTW: Could you give us the newest patch/change notes for your mod?

In the update few hours before, I implemented the changes to the overworld beacons I mentioned in the first post of this discussion here.

I mentioned I wanted to change the mechanics of the bp drops a bit, and I did it now:
This means, the overall max quality has shrunk to 10. However, bp's drop independently from the itemset you drop, leading to equal chances of all those bp's to drop. I also increased the chance again, it's 50% now.

Further balancing should be done someday. For now, test it :)

For the last 10 beacons I can say that they're not worth it anymore... Primitive scuba flippers, 1 absorbent substrate, etc in red ones, behemoth blueprints in yellows and stone stuff in blue ones. The version before was kinda more worth it. ;)

Actually, I could reset it to (I'll call it) v1 if needed. Still, I want to test it a bit myself as well.

Edit: first yellow beacon and there is an apprentice heavy miners helmet bp, next to a rocket launcher. Looks like it works, at least :)

Edit 2: white beacon, journeyman Cloth pants :)

So, after a couple of hours I think it's definitively not worth it. I'd rather go for the vanilla underwater cave crates than hunting hours upon hours for red or yellow drops only to get crap like 4 behemoth gates or primitive scuba stuff. :( Will try it another week and then decide if I will unsubscribe or not.

What did you hunt for? What was better before / what's worse now?
