Paths

Seriously WTH Paths Problem
This one has me thrown worse than any mod issue I've dealt with. Played a game of AE with Paths installed, np - everything worked fine - until I hit the IT content. At that point all my set items immediately reverted to their regular TQAE values, not the modified Paths items. I.e. my Veneficus set was back to having the standard game stormcaller's set bonuses. The items are still named properly, it is only the set bonuses that have been affected. The names of the set items under the set bonus area are also wrong - Stormcaller's instead of Veneficus.

I've reinstalled, I've deleted my entire my documents directory of TQ files, I've disabled cloud sync, I've even cleaned the registry out of any reference to TQ - but the problem is now permanent. Any new character I make also has set items using the incorrect bonuses - and yep this is bad, Veneficus sets have incredibly useful bonuses. +Electrial burn? Not so helpful. Oddly, this persists even downloading the non-steam version of the mod and installing it the old way with the directory structure. I cannot shake this bug no matter what I try. Any suggestions are welcome, because I was having fun playing this before the bug showed up.

*Another odd note - items show up correctly as far as set area names when viewed in TQVaultAE (on the oldschool install.) Once you enter the game though - nope, old names on anything past the item name, and old bonuses. Halp "/

If you make a new character and cheat yourself in that set via TQVault, is the set broken?

(I assume TQVault can do that but I havent used it in like 10 years)

Yeah - I tried both TQVault AE and TQVault XL - those are kinda the two successors of the original TQVault since AE came out. Both have to be used with the non-workshop install - have yet to find a version of TQVault that can handle the workshop mods right. In both cases, the items look right in Vault. At least the names are correct in the set bonuses section of the card. You can't see the actual bonuses in Vault so hard to say there. But yeah, once you log into the game, bad set names and bonuses on the bonus section of the item cards only. Actual item names still correct for Paths. Seems the vault progs are reading the files properly - the game is reading properly up to the point it hits the set-specific code - then not so much.

I'm just puzzled as to what the heck could do that AND persist through such complete game/mod/registry wipe reinstalls. See why I'm confused? If a reinstall fixed it, or did so for a while, I'd figure the arz's had something hinky somewhere - but as it stands... da F?

I even played a game of Paths with a new character, no Vaulting, clean new TQ/Paths install with no other characters created or Vaulted. Ran around until a set item dropped. Same problem - item name correct for paths, item name in the set bonus section not correct for Paths. I really wasn't going to play until I got a second item from that set, I haven't got THAT much time with the drop rate as random as it is, but since the names are wrong the bonuses are almost certainly so still as well. The problem appears to be pretty well set in stone now, regardless of what I change/reinstall/do. If I'm in Paths, it's not gonna do the set items correctly - end of story.

**Might be important, I dunno, but the version of Paths I've been installing to play/Vault with is the one you linked in the forums for non-Steam/GoG users. I do have the Steam version, but you can't atm (to my knowledge) use any of the Vault progs with workshop mods. TQVault XL has a section for it in the config, but I have yet to get it to function with any workshop mod.

While you're here... I gotta say I love the Veneficus. I've been playing Paths off and on since the Lilith version came out - and it's still one of my favorite ARPG classes ever. I wish I could port it to other games. Death on wheels, yet you screw up, miskey, or don't notice something in time you're dead. Pretty much the definition of glass cannon done right to me. Bordering on OP offensively, and if you don't watch your rear you're dogmeat in two seconds. Amazing piece of work on that - so thanks :) /fanboy off

*remember posting back in the day grumbling about the force javelin sound effect too. The original one was loud and ... whompy - specially at 300% casting speed. Was quite glad to see that one didn't stand the test of time.

First off, wow that IS crazy, I don't know what's going on.

For future testing, don't wait for drops, just spawn them in via vault.

"I've reinstalled, I've deleted my entire my documents directory of TQ files"---You've probably already done this, but have you also deleted the TQ directory itself after uninstalling? There's the my documents/titan quest folder, then there's also the folder where the actual game installs. Maybe there's some weird leftover files in there? I'm pretty much stumped though, I can't think of what could be carrying over...

@Venefici, thank you! I think many devs these days are afraid to push things too far because the community will freak out or it will make balancing too hard, so you get a whole game full of watered-down 'safe' design. I'm a big believer in 'design first, fix it after'. It takes more work but I think it gets better results than trying to censor yourself before you've even started.

Hah that was you that suggested the sound change? I do still remember that. Been awhile!

Yep, that was me complaining. Go go feedback!

And yeah, I have indeed deleted all the directories, all the registry entries, all the my documents references, I mean I've deleted every single darn thing I can think of. No dice. Only extremely outside weirdo chance idea I had is that maybe somehow one of the TQVaults screwed up the item files when it saved them to the character, but that shouldn't affect new drops. Did the play till a new drop thing to try to weed that out "/ Yeah I just have no clue in the damn world at this point - so I'm not hardly gonna throw rocks if you don't either. This is just plain "This should not be happening."

Well, update such as it is - I even decided to try deleting all TQ instances, registry entries, etc - and then reinstalled TQ, TQIT, and then TQAE in the hope that that would jog something into place. I even downloaded all new vault files to import into TQVault, same result. Whatever it is, it's definitely happening once the game is started, here are screenshots of the items as they appear in the vault, and the items as they appear in the game. Not sure that helps, but shrug. Frustrating as fluck this is.

Hah. This time went in, deleted all the registry entries, all the my documents, all the program files, and even everything in appdata for my account and the default. Hard powered the PC off, tried again. Same nonsense. I guess I am done - something has gone irrevocably farking wrong - and there's just no licking it. Giant sad face - I've literally deleted every possible registry, directory, or documentary reference to TQ in any form, and I'm still SOL. I give up.

Have you also been uninstalling/deleting/clearing out TQ Vault? It might be the culprit somehow?

Do you have any other system to try on? Laptop or friends computer or anything? Obviously I'm reaching at this point, but if it works fine on a different computer then I'm out of ideas too.

Very sorry :[

Yeah, I've reinstalled TQVaultAE and TQVault XL both, several times, changed actual vault item files too - I even deregistered the .dll that comes with TQ Vault in a fit of "I've tried everything else" and re-registered - doesn't appear to be the culprit. Unfortunately, I do not have another computer to try it on - so yeah... heh. That's kinda why I'm at "I give up." atm. If I have any actual new progress or anything I'll update this thread - but for now I'm taking some headache meds and leaving it be. Thanks for trying to help, but I have a feeling this is one of those ultra-specific system/program hardware in a specific instance interactions that's hell to pin down "/

Still no joy - I downloaded Msr. Lammoureaux's latest TQAEVault with full and proper workshop support, the bug continues exactly as is even with that and the workshop mod only installed. So... anyone know any good exorcists?
