Powering Down
EDIT: This is no longer really applicable.

(I wanted to make this a comment, but I'm long-winded as usual, so it's a forum post. :P)

Over the past month and a half, I have found it increasingly difficult to set aside time to work on this mod. This hasn't been due to a lack of time (though I have been doing a lot of other stuff), but more of a lack of motivation.

Part of the problem is the immensely demoralizing effect of not being able to track down that nebula crashing thing until I asked Lucas for help (some of you may recall that I was almost ready to throw in the towel before I thought of asking him) - knowing that the mod refuses to work for no apparent reason isn't exactly helpful.

A much bigger issue, however, is that I originally started working on this mod because I liked the way it was improving the game and I wanted to help make it even better. Basically, I wanted to improve my own gameplay experience with the pleasant side-effect of improving it for other people too. You can't improve what you don't have, and between being sick of the AI and being unable to get a genuinely pleasant multiplayer match out of the community, I can honestly say that I haven't started SR2 up for weeks, and I haven't enjoyed starting it in months (partly due to the crashes). I can't play competitively, not well enough to stand a chance against anyone I can find, and I can no longer find people willing to play non-competitive matches. (Or enough people that my lack of skill becomes less problematic in a competitive game - 6-way FFA is one thing, but 2v1 is the best I've gotten lately.)

There's also the matter of basically single-handedly developing an increasingly complicated mod with increasingly complex plans for its future - since last September there has been precisely one commit on the GitHub repo that wasn't by me, and I'm afraid I'm not as unstoppable as dolynick. :P

The bottom line is, I'm making my 'retirement' official, effectively shutting down all RS development. This has been coming for a while now, I've just been trying to ignore the signs, praying something would kick me back into action.

I'll still be lurking around in the forums and on the Discord, being helpful and what not, and I'll try to force myself to finish the nebula fix (and I'll keep the various downloads up to date in the unlikely event that RS has more patches left in it), but I don't expect to do any actual modding past the next update. (No, I don't have an ETA on that one. I still need to fix nebulae, remember?)

The past couple of years have been nice (on average :P), and if I have any regrets they're mostly about SR2's own failure (let's face it, if the game had received half of the attention it deserved, I wouldn't have so much trouble getting a match going in one of the its largest mods) and about butting heads with Alar so often. I've learned a lot here, and even if I never play SR2 again, I don't think I'll be forgetting about this place any time soon.

You'll be missed. ABEM and RS in particular, and modding in general, are the main reasons that a unique game like SR2 will be playable for years to come.

I do find it extremely frustrating that SR2 released at such a time that Greenlight flooded Steam with a million crappy overpriced games as well; it's hard to get the spotlight when the stage is overcrowded with MOO2 ripoffs with a facelift, even (or especially) if you provide a number of fairly different-from-the-mainstream mechanics put together in a package that works, and with the support of some forums like Bay12.

Best of luck to you, as I know I wouldn't personally have the concentration or motivation to work on something so large when so few get to enjoy it.

You forgot DOF. If he keeps up his current pace, dolynick will soon have a lifestyle and an AI for every shipset he makes. :P

Yeah, it's a shame SR2 was looked over like that. The moddability alone makes it worth looking at, but most of the more dedicated modders I know of are still sticking with Sins of a Solar Empire or Space Empires.

Eh, it's not so much a matter of other people not enjoying it, it's more a matter of me not being able to enjoy it. Judging from the old days, back in Early Access, I seem to be most effective when I'm working with others on something that directly benefits me. (Not that the 'others like it too' thing didn't help slow this down.)

This is a shame really. I really liked the mod; at those times when it did not bluescreen my pc. I wish you good luck with the nebulae, and everything else, not just modding, for that matter.

Even if the mod remains broken forever in the normal play, and even that I cannot imagine playing vanilla ever again, I think I'll still have a few fun weekends figuring out how to murder ships with more ships in the editor.

Well, thanks for your hard work.

As far as I know, it's not too broken (at least in terms of crashing or other gamebreaking bugs) if you disable nebulae and avoid maps which innately have a bunch of nebulae? The nebula fix should stabilize things a lot.

I'm sad to hear about this, this is the best mod for Star Ruler that I've found.

I would say that I would love to play MP games with you and whoever you find, unfortunately my internet won't allow it. Well it might, but the times would be really weird, some days it works fine all day, other days it will only work from 8PM - 4AM. Centurylink is not a good ISP.

I hope that things go well for you and thank you for the awesome mod.

Would you say I could play this and still have fun? Or is it too incomplete to enjoy? I have yet to play it and just came across your 'retirement' post, so I'm unsure how to procede.

Yes you can, there are some bugs still in, some balance and AI issues, but over all it's a good fun mod. MUCH better then vanilla in my opinion.

How would you say it compares to the dolynick's Faction Add-On (and all the shipsets) mod?

  • Gameplay: It's... different. Shields are probably better (I think - I haven't really done a comparison on them), and the galaxy is a lot bigger (something I kept wanting to pick up, but never got around to doing), but other than that it's mostly been a really complex race/art mod.

ABEM/RS mostly focused on adding new mechanics that all the existing races could take advantage of (Progenitor tech, stellar shielding, nebulae - which are broken enough that you do not want to use them in your games yet - and the extended game configuration menu), though some of the more notable ones never made it back into the mod's post-WotH incarnation.
  • Art: DOF is better by a huge margin. It also 'feels' better when playing, probably because of the improved size scaling.
  • Content: I'm not really sure which mod would last longer in a multiplayer game. In singleplayer, DOF is the clear winner because it has proper AI support for all the stuff it's doing - RS never even bothered.
  • Author support: Well, dolynick's still here, Alar and I aren't. I think this one's pretty clear. :P

Okay, the nebula fix is up and running. That takes care of that.
Astral 9 Apr, 2017 @ 9:46am
Out of curiosity, what was causing it?
Dalo Lorn  [developer] 9 Apr, 2017 @ 9:47am
It's a little hard to explain, as is the fix itself - but basically the method I was using to ensure ownership transfer of nebula clusters caused infinite recursion and blew up.

That you for all of your hard work Dalo. I have enjoyed Rising Stars for SR2 was just as much as Galactic Armoury for SR1 (GA was rather enjoyable). I wish you all the best for the future.

I'm sorry and not sorry to hear this -- mods are, at root, labors of love done by people who love the games they love enough to see their potential and make them more than the developers, for whatever reasons, did. If you're no longer into it, it's good that you move on to things in your life that are better investments for your energy and emotion. We all benefit enormously from the passion and industry of modders such as yourself, but you are never beholden to us, never owe us anything. Best wishes for whatever your next project is! (and, of course, should you become bored and turn your mind back to this mod, we will appreciate anything else you choose to add).
