Caracole vs. Carousel formation for Cavalry
Hi Crynos,

I was wondering if you would consider including a Caracole formation for Pistoliers. Briefly, it is similar to the Carousel but not quite the same, primarily used for harassing infantry. The cavalry form into a rough square and then the front rank turns to one side, fires a pistol, turns to the other side, fires again, then peels of to join the back of the formation. The second rank trot forward, turn, fires once, turns, fires again, and peels off. And so on. By the time the first rank is at the front again they have reloaded. In this way, the company is able to keep up constant, sustained fire on an enemy whilst the formation remains stationary.

This sort of formation has the advantage of keeping the unit tightly packed so they could transition into a charge very quickly (compared to the Carousel) or ride away in formation very quickly, but of course this leaves them more vulnerable to counter fire and counter charge than the carousel formation, so it was primarily used against infantry. Heavy Cavalry also used it to lay down some fire and then charge at an opportune moment (I'm not sure if there are any heavy cavalry in warhammer that also use pistols?).

Here, the point isn't so much to fire while closest and thus achieve greatest accuracy, as you state in the Carousel description, but rather to keep up a constant, steady barrage of volleys to break morale, prevent counter-fire, and remain in formation to follow up with a charge if desired. So, while similar, it does have different tactical use.

You can read about it on the Wikipedia page.

As far as I'm aware, Empire Pistolier's would probably be the only units to employ such a tactic, but it fits them far better than the Carousel. I have no modding experience so I don't really know the difficulty of what I'm asking, but I thought I'd point it out and you can decide to implement it if you like.

Either way, thank you for the fantastic Mod. Formations, for me, are an essential part of Total War and I was hugely disappointed that they are not in the Base game.

Well, aside from that making a formation for a single unit type with no subtypes and which gets replaced rather quickly by higher grade units (Outriders) is not particulary interesting to do, I can't actually create new formations or modify the existing ones or how they behave, so this is not going to be possible anyways.
