Disorienting Blast -> Smoke Bomb : I'm not sure on this one just because I don't think it goes with the ability as well, I just don't think a smoke bomb could disorientate as much as a vapor that is made especially for disorientation (but that's just me)
Battlefield Medicine -> Check-up : I think it's just a bit too ''punny'' and dosen't really fit with the rest of the names
Battle Heal -> Stand Behind Me : I really like the name I just don't it works with the base ability,
But I think it would work amazingly for the MaA Defender ability with the rename of ''Get Behind Me!'' as if he's yelling out to the hero that going to blocking hits for, I also think it fits with his character better as I think of him of being really protective of his fellow heros after loseing so many men in various wars
Thanks a ton for the feedback! I totally agree about Battle Heal, it really doesn't work very well without using my rebalance mod in addition. I'll definitely consider giving the name to the MaA, but first I need a nice, thematic Crusader heal name. Any ideas?
For the PD skills I see where you're coming from, as well. I actually wanted a more serious name for Battlefield Medicine (I initially had it as Improvised Medicine until I saw all the medical tools on the icon, didn't make much sense). I just feel like Battlefield Medicine is too similar to Battlefield Bandage, but I'm a bit at a loss for names. Suggestions again appreciated! For Smoke Bomb, I feel you but personally enjoy the thought of a Plague Doctor who doesn't entirely focus on just poison. I thought a smoke reaction would highlight chemical knowledge, and since smoke blinds and chokes I would imagine it's about as disorienting as a random vapour. I also wanted to get the word vapour out of the PD's kit, since I feel like that theme is totally owned by the Antiquarian now.
Totally agree about the word vapour too. Seems too light, almost refreshing. Unless it was something like Laudnum Smoke Bomb or something. Like an opiate or drug related thing that makes people dizzy. Laudnum sort of suits the time frame also.
Just my two cents anyway, mate. Great work and subbed.
With that in mind, I've changed quite a few things up:
Crusader:
Stand Behind Me (Battle Heal) -> Hold Fast
Man at Arms:
Crushing Blow (Crush) -> No Quarter
Vanguard (Defender) -> Stand Behind Me!
Bludgeon (Tier 5 weapon name) -> Morning Glory
Plague Doctor:
Check-up (Battlefield Medicine) -> Sterilize Wound
Smoke Bomb (Disorienting Blast) -> Volatile Reaction
Vestal:
Holy Cudgel (Mace Bash) -> Blessed Bludgeon
Mostly common sense stuff. I gave the Crusader's heal a name that fits the vanilla skill more appropriately, while also emphasizing the perservering nature of a zealous soldier.
Instead, I've given the name to MaA's Defender ability to better emphasize his protective nature. I was initially happy with my renaming of Crush to Crushing Blow, until a Bone Captain used his own Crushing Blow ability on me! Wanting to avoid redundant names, I've renamed the skill something more flavorful that utilizes military terminology, an important aspect of the MaA's characterization. I've also renamed his tier 5 weapon from Bludgeon to Morning Glory for two main reasons - it's not really a bludgeon in technical terms, it's clearly a spiked mace (or Morningstar, for you guys in the know), and because I've used the term bludgeon later in a Vestal skill name. It's also honestly a much cooler name - I might go back and look over level 5 armor and skill names in the future.
I was surprised at the contentiousness of the Plague Doctor's renames, mostly since I thought it would be the Jester's punny abilities that would rub people the wrong way. I get it though - the Jester is meant to be tongue-in-cheek and sadistically funny, while the PD is a very serious character. I've renamed Check-up "Sterilize Wound", first off. I really liked the suggestions of Cauterize and Trauma Ward, but the first didn't really fit the tooltip picture and the latter didn't fit the small-scale healing scope of the ability. I settled on Sterilize because it's a nice verbose form of disinfect, which matches the theme of the ability and its icon extremely well. I've also renamed Smoke Bomb to Volatile Reaction. I didn't care for Smoke Bomb myself, I was just at a loss for good words by the end of the mod, haha. Hopefully Volatile Reaction should convey the emphasis I want on the Plague Doctor's holistic chemical knowledge and scientific knowhow, while also hitting the more visceral and power-packed feel of a good skill name for you guys!
Side note here: the idea of cauterization would make a bomb ability - imagine a skill that does extra damage to bleeding enemies at the cost of removing the bleed would be really interesting. If RH ever implements a class with a fire theme, we're good to go!
Finally, for the Vestal I was pretty unhappy with Holy Cudgel (my rename of Mace Bash). The Houndmaster's weapon is already listed as a cudgel in-game, and the name didn't even really give me the badass feeling I wanted in the first place. Instead, I went with the name "Blessed Bludgeon", which doubles as backstory on her weapon (a club blessed by the Church) and the verbal "to bludgeon (blessedly, haha)". As a side note, her weapon was never a mace at all - maces are defined technically by a shaft with a rounded/bulbous head (no innuendo intended). The more tapered, thick blunt weapon the Vestal uses is more in-line with a club/bludgeon. C'mon Red Hook! I know you guys aren't weapons experts by trade, so just hire me!
Anyways, I really hope you guys are down with the changes. If you have any more suggestions, feel free to hit me up. Nomenclature is honestly one of the most important facets of nailing something thematically, and it's really underappreciated in the video game world - I'm so glad to see people who realize the importance. Cheers!
finale> The final countdown
A lot of the names you came up with are very flavorful (Stuck Pig, Pommel Bash, Sucker Punch, Maul, No Quarter, I love them!!), but I also changed some around myself. Here they are:
Crusader's Inspiring Cry/Inspiring Presence → Camaraderie
I wanted to highlight the Crusader's soldier thematics, seeing as the crusades were religious wars. This is also fitting with, and inspired by, the narrator's "Compassion is a rarity in the fevered pitch of battle" line.
Highwayman's
- Pistol Shot/Between the Eyes → Deadeye
- Clean Guns → Lock, Stock & Barrel
Can't explain the change to Deadeye as much more than personal preference, I didn't like Between the Eyes very much. In one of his barks, the Highwayman even says "Damn, I missed your eyes!" which I think implies that he is aiming for the eyes rather than between them.
Clean Guns just sounds lame. I imagine the Highwayman already cleans his guns regularly. I'd hope so, at least.
Plague Doctor's Emboldening Vapours/Smelling Salts → Stimulants
Smelling Salts is absolutely perfect in the context of your rebalance mod, but I'm not using it right now so I wanted something else. I did some research on performance-enhancing drugs and couldn't decide between "Benny/Bennies" and "Benzoic Ephedrine" (both referring to Benzedrine, though I don't think benzoic ephedrine is an actual substance) or "Séquard's Elixir" (you know how Dungeons & Dragons does this sometimes? Tasha's Hideous Laughter, Leomund's Tiny Hut, Tenser's Floating Disk, Evard's Black Tentacles etc.)
In the end, I chose Stimulants because it's simple, broad, and doesn't reference any specific real-life substances or people.
Vestal's
- Divine Comfort/Heavenly Warmth → Benevolence
- Pray/Desperate Prayer → Communion
- "The Hand of Light" (Level 5 Weapon) → "The Dawnbringer"
I love simple names and I love these words in particular. The Vestal's lack of benevolence was glaring from my very first time playing DD.
Also, why does her Level 5 Weapon have the same name as one of her skills? Let's not have that.
Grave Robber's Shadow Fade/Now You See Me... → Cloak and Dagger
Though not as playful as Now You See Me..., Cloak and Dagger seems like the perfect expression to describe the new invisibility-and-crit-granting Shadow Fade.
Jester's Inspiring Tune/Lighthearted Ditty → Rhapsody
Highly emotional, episodic yet integrated, free-flowing and improvisatory is exactly what I imagine the Jester's music sounds like. This also keeps up the music references he's got going on with his camping skills.
Abomination's Rake → Maim
Similar to benevolence, this is another word I really like. I had considered renaming the Highwayman's Open Vein to this, but I'd rather the Abomination have it.
Bounty Hunter's This is How We Do It/How It's Done → Tricks of the Trade
How It's Done feels off to me when it's written by itself rather than in a full phrase, so I switched it for another expression that still emphasizes the Bounty Hunter's professionalism.
Man-at-Arms' "The Bulwark" (Level 5 Armor) → "The Steadfast Sentinel"
This is due to the Vestal's Level 5 Armor also being called "The Blessed Bulwarks". You can't have two Bulwarks when their armor is supposed to be unique!
I made many more unlisted modifications, like giving Jester both Bit Off the Top as well as Sharp Wit (instead of Dirk Stab/Face the Music) or reducing Grapeshot Blast/Barrage to just Grapeshot.
This mod's biggest strength is, by far, how open-ended and customizable it is. Probably spent like 3~4 hours going over the .xml and adjusting it to my own tastes. Thank you so much, OP.
I'll definitely incorporate some of the changes I love from you if I revisit this in the future!
Abomination:
Maul (vanilla rage) -> Thrash
Swat (vanilla slam) -> Maul
Finally got something I liked better for Slam, but since I was already using Maul for Rage, I gave Rage a new name that still denotes its violence.
Arbalest:
Survivor (level 5 armor) -> Sole Survivor
Just spicing up her max level armor a tad to emphasize her backstory.
Crusader:
Zealous Conviction (lvl 5 armor) -> Unwavering Conviction
Zealous is a great word, just overused for the Crusader.
Highwayman:
Between the Eyes (vanilla pistol shot) -> Deadeye
Grapeshot Barrage (vanilla grapeshot blast) -> Grapeshot
Clean Guns -> Lock, Stock, & Barrel
All from Chokes, really simplifying and improving the names. I think for such simple abilities, simple one-word names fit well, while Clean Guns was always meh.
Jester:
Sharp Wit (vanilla Slice Off) -> Bit off the Top
Face the Music (vanilla Dirk Stab) -> Sidesplitter
Bit off the Top was a top-notch suggestion, and I was never happy with my Dirk Stab replacement. Part of me wants a skill name with Dirk in it still, since it's a great word, but I really like the pun here with jamming a blade into their guts vs. telling a sidesplitting joke. Also more thematically tells that the ability does damage.
Man-at-Arms:
Deafening Bellow (vanilla bellow) -> Bellow
Bolster Formation (vanilla bolster) -> Bolster
Veteran Command (vanilla command) -> At my Signal
Seasoned Tactics (vanilla tactics) -> Veteran Tactics
Bulwark (level 5 armor) -> The Stalwart Sentinel
Undoing some of my unnecessary early edits, as well as changing Command to be a little more thematic. The level 5 armor had a boring, repetitive name so I'm updating it with a name inspired from Chokes.
Occultist:
Withering Curse (vanilla weakening curse) -> Languishing Curse
Changing Wither since the Eternal modded class uses it more thematically.
Plague Doctor:
Smelling Salts (vanilla Emboldening Vapours) -> Stimulants
Again from Chokes. Simple, fitting, and thematic.
Vestel:
Heavenly Warmth (vanilla divine comfort) -> Benevolence
Hand of Radiance (vanilla hand of light) -> Lightbringer
Hand of Light (level 5 weapon) -> Hand of Radiance
Blessed Bulwark (level 5 armor) -> Hallowed Bastion
Combination of rewording for simplicity's sake while maintaining thematics and improving the weak naming of the Vestel's max level upgrades.
I'm fairly happy with these for now, and barring further great suggestions I'll likely be moving on to releasing something similar for the modded classes I like, so stay tuned if interested.
