I also have found that leaving the settings higher actually gives me more stable framerates and lower CPU usage. Something isn't working right, and I can't pinpoint the exact setting, but I believe one of the "low" settings is actually messing up a lot of people's performance.
I really don't know what to do at this point. I've just been sticking with running everything maxed today, because if I drop it down, I get the same performance anyway, often worse. Who knows, only thing I can say for certain is I hope a day one patch helps this out, as I shouldn't be struggling this much above recommended settings.
