Starting from Valve provided model - Bone confusion.
Hi their,
I've been working on getting my first model put together but am having difficulties with the downloaded models. Mostly I think I'm just missing something about how to work with them in blender.

What I'm trying to do is remove Keeper of the Lights staff so I can model a new one in it's place. I can't seem to figure out how to separate the individual components of the models that valve provides though. Am I just missing something about how the vertex groups and bones interact with eachother?

An easy way to select connected vertices is by pressing "L" while hovering your mouse over the mesh. Try doing that over the staff and see if it selects just the staff.
Thanks! That worked for getting the staff out of the way. Makes it much easier to be able to model in place.

Now I just need to figure out how to attach things to the armature properly...
