Spliting workshop files that are over 200 MB
Any idea how to do it correctly for the workshop?

I thought i could split the vpk into 3 parts having some content in each with each vpk being less then 200MB but i can't seem to upload the first file at all thats 186MB..

Thanks!

Hey Hi, I was going to try the same thing. Is it worth splitting up the vpks in say maps, scripts etc, models, materials? Some standard formatting help might be useful as a guide for people?

Thanks Morly

Hi guys. I think we actually have a problem other than the file size issue that we're investigating right now. There should be no wrong way to split up the .vpks as long as you have all the right ones active and don't have conflicts with other mods. Could you try uploading a very small one just to confirm whether you can upload at all?

I was able to upload a small vpk as a test so thats working. Now spliting my vpk in this instance was a little strange but i was able to get it working my scripts were orginally only in the first vpk but found out that my finale map(which is is the 2nd vpk) needed the same scripts in the vpk2 instance or the finale wouldn't run properly.. here is how setup mine:

-----------------------------
VPK1: 181MB

Maps
missions
scripts
addoninfo.txt
--------------
VPK2: 172MB
maps
materials
missions
models
scripts
sound
addoninfo.txt
----------------------------

I was able to load them just fine and play via a lobby from one map to the next until the final map.

I wish there was a simpler way and i don't even know if this is a correct way of doing this..

@GShock. So, the game will seamesly load the next workshop? Or do you ned to subscribe to them all?

I have a bit of a question on this bit.

I am currently thinking about separating my campaign. But I do not know if I have to change the endings on the maps to load the workshop window (like in Portal 2) or wheter I leave the map as it is and via scripts or something the game will start loading the next workshop file.

EDIT. I have just realized my campaign is smaller than 200 MB (The vpk is 145). I will not have to divide my campaign. Still, if someone knows the answer, it would be nice to know.

Players would have to subscribe to each vpk, but ideally the campaign parts should be made into a collection so they can just subscribe to that. You shouldn't have to do anything different to the vpks to make them work seamlessly together, but there's still some work ongoing to make sure that's the case.

@Kerry, question when you add say 2 parts to the workshop will either part force the end user to download the other part or will it be up to them to know to download it? I hope its not up to them because thats going to get really confusing fast with content missing when playing...

Also adding two parts will i need to create them under the same name each upload or should i name the parts ie (downtown dine_1; downtowndine_2) ect...

btw still can't upload the files error writing to steam cloud..

@Kerry, I will do some quick vpks and try it out. What I gather from you is that I can just divide map 1 (with its nav, sounds, etc) and when the players reach the checkpoint for map 2 (in another vpk) as long as they are subscribes, it will load automatically, right?

That's the idea, yes.

For campaigns can you make a workshop item require another item in the workshop?
Motanum 12 Dec, 2012 @ 12:58pm
I am almost done finishing map 1 of my campaign. I will do the next one soon.

At Gshock, that would be pretty nice to have. If we could link workshop items, and when users subscribe to one, a window tells them its part of a whole and asks if they want to susbcribe to all the other items. If the player presses now, a message that says "This item my not work as fully intended due to its missing susbcription to workshop items". Although, I don't know what the guys at Valve have planed.

After today's update, the game should handle split campaigns correctly. If you want to split a campaign across multiple VPKs, the only thing you need to do is add the "missions" directory (containing the campaign's mission script) in every split VPK. Other than that, you should be able to split up the files however you want.

Regarding dependencies between workshop items, that is a feature that has been discussed for the future, but doesn't currently exist. Collections are the closest thing we have to that right now.

Thanks Kerry,
in the update that was going to be released yesterday will it also address the issue with uploading files? I still can't upload my full campaign with it split up. Each vpk is less than 200Mb (181MB and 177MB).

It still gives me an error
"Fail to write file(path to my vpk) to Steam Cloud! Please verify the filename and try again."

Thanks.

gschock, the update did not go yesterday, if I recall correctly. And I was also getting that error.

GShock knows the update was rolled back yesterday, as he said "In the update that was going to be released yesterday...". He was only asking if the update in question would fix the issue when uploading larger files to the Workshop.
