Down Votes
Look, Donderbus, I apprreciate your opinion about what might have lead players to vote my map Gelly Beans down. While what you're writing may be true, the thing is that none of us will ever know ... that's what this thread was supposed to be about. I may in fact have received a down vote because one player was left by his girl- or her boy-friend that day or because or because it was the thenth gel map that he or she played in a row and way just fed up with gel. We can go on speculating about the reasons for down votes but that won't help me or anybody else.

What might help is to share your own experiences with down votes. The more members of this group will do this, the easier it may become for all or even just some of us to deal with those 'expressions of rejection'. In fact let me tell you a little bit more about how I dealt with down votes. At the beginning of my mapping "career" I was seriously offended and upset with any down vote. It took me quite a while to understand that it isn't the down vote itself that upset me but the fact that I never knew why my map was down voted. This realization eventually lead me to not care about the (few) down votes I received on most of my maps.

However, I do notice down votes and receiving a majority of down votes on the first day after publishing a map does affect me because I see a player hitting the "thumbs down" button and I don't know why! When I saw that nintendo.erk feels the same in the discussion of the map that I linked above, I decided to open this topic. We have a proverb in Germany that goes something like this: a pain shared is just half the pain.

Ok, enough of me trying to give this thread the intended direction. I'm bad with forcing the intended solution on the player in my maps, why would I be able to do that in a discussion ;)
Hi all!

I don't know whether this is the appropriate section for this discussion or whether this discussion is approriate at all. I've been thinking about starting this thread since my last map Gelly Beans was seriously down voted within no time. Only when I saw the "discussion" for one of nintendo.erk's last maps (click here), I decided to start this.

I guess the main focus of this disussion should be to ... I don't even know what? Maybe exchange information, share how you deal with down votes etc. So I'll just start:

There's no map in my workshop that hasn't been down voted. The average amount of down votes is approximately 25% which, honestly, I find quite high. But there are also about 20% down votes in my most successful map which leads me to believe that every map has an amount of something between maybe 15% and 30% down votes. Would you agree?

Like nintendo.erk I was seriously pissed with 75% down votes within a couple of hours for my map Gelly Beans. 3 down votes, only one up. I consider that map pretty much standard (no new unknown elements) and I also think that it's fun to play (I may be wrong about that though ;) So I wonder how and why people vote it down.

It is unfortunate that there can only be speculation about the motivation of those down votes. Is it really just that people find a map too difficult so that they hit the "thumbs down" button? Or did they play it and vote it down? If so, why? What did they think about it? I was wondering whether a group of players should approach Valve suggesting a mandatory explanation for a down vote ... but I guess players that don't give a damn about the effort that others invest into making maps will just write rubbish.

Ok, enough of me ranting ... any thoughts on your mind that you wanna share?
