Genre Prejudice
My game is an online puzzle fighter. I have it running in multiple data centers, 8/10 players love it if they've played it. However, Greenlight seems to be a game of "you've got a puzzle piece in your screenshot, go back to Facebook." in my case. Only 20 views of my trailer and only 14 plays of my demo despite 3500 views.

I've actually had to start hiding puzzle pieces in my media in hopes that people will at least try the demo before downvoting it.

Advice is so very welcome.

I am so tired you guys I'd so love to help but I need some sleep pretty soon =D
Just quick:
this whole thing is new to indies and vice verca, most of the customers here are used to very high standards, and steam just lowered the bar so serious indie developers can hop on if they wish to do so... we wont get every thing "as is" on steam and the bar wont be lower and that is a good thing, we have to work on our games to suit up, may take a bit of pimping just to make it solid.

Well, there's also a certain reasonable limit for what you can do as a small team (or single person) production. A few people seem to expect everyone to be able to toss up the kind of quality art that triple AAA titles provide via a large group of dedicated artists. I think the main focus probably should be on gameplay... if it's fun, people will like it and eventually word will get out.

In my case, it has nothing to do with pimping. People refuse to consider puzzle games.

Genre prejudice or just genre preference? Steam seems a bit low on puzzle game fans, maybe because it hasn't historically focused on them and there are so many more available on other sites (including smartphone marketplaces). I confess I tend to think of puzzle games as 'something I can play on my phone', and when I'm at a PC I want usually something that makes use of the 30" screen and surround sound.

wow, it is an awesome game. i just played it and it is so fun. an it would be much better if you can add some features. for ex: player can choose his abilities like which attack style to use etc.

Brilliant idea. Congratulations.

I think that my projects, being in a niche genre of train-simulator, that it will be an uphill-battle to garner vote-ups or positive interest from the larger majority of Gamers.

It seems to be that if a game isn't in a "popular" genre and if it isn't the standard 3D-Shoot-em-up, Racing game with the bestest-modern-graphics, or doesn't have "ZombieZzZzzLolzz", that chances are it will have some "Genre Prejudice" from a lot of Gamers out there.

I have received some posts that seemed to be obvious trolling, and even some personal insults and threats. Why? Well, I've not done nor said nothing wrong or bad to anyone, I haven't violated any rules and I do my best to be friendly and polite to people, so I can only guess some of those types of bad comments I've received are perhaps in part due to "Genre Prejudice", and perhaps in part due to some immature-jerks just being, well, immature-jerks ;)

However, I still feel that if you offer a quality product, have confidence in your work/game, know that it is functional and people would probably enjoy to play if they were actually willing to give it a try, then there's still a chance to gain interest and support from the Community.

Having our projects on Greenlight, even if they aren't among a "popular" genre of game, I still think it's a good way to connect with the gaming Community, to help get word of our projects out-there, and may yet lead to some good opportunites and success in time.

Remember, "You can please some of the people some of the time. But you can't please all of the people all of the time".

Just do your best, have a positive and professional attitude, smile, try to have a thick-skin (expect trolls & haters, but don't let it bring you down, and try not to bring yourself down to their level), and you just may find over time that you may indeed gain a good amount of positive interest and support in you and your projects.

Cheers! :)
