If your file size is too big, that might be why it can't be loaded and this might be related to save file bloating problem.

If the file size is normal, then you have different problem and I am not sure what it can be.

Normal is a very relative term, it varies by number of players and how many turns are played, but for a 5 player game that is at about 100 turns, 900-1200 KB can be considered normal based on what I see of the save files in my archive.

As this issue came up again in one of my games, I thought it would be a good idea to bump this thread so that players can learn how to prevent bloating and also how to fix an already bloated save file.

@The Spid I do not think GMR assigns the random civs, but they are assigned by the game when the host creates the game. The hosts selects which DLCs are enabled then starts the game (actual CIV game) and all players are assigned their civs (specific or random). Therefore, if some players do not have some of the DLCs and if this was agreed in the game creation, the host would start the game having those disabled and no player would get a civ that they do not have (if a DLC is left enabled any player who does not have DLC would not be able to play their turn anyway)

The GMR site, as Rillithain mentioned, is really slow at the moment (better than yesterday though). I am having a hard time even when posting comments, reverting a turn takes a few tries of each taking 5 - 10 minutes. Therefore, I am afraid what I will experience when creating a new game and holding off for the moment.
