"You can't run the game?"
CAN YOU?

Basically, I've spent 15 hours trying to make the game run on a 1440px screen using a 4070 Super, and it GPU bottlenecks on 'optimised' settings (there are hardly any for that matter). If I use up-scaling like DLSS, it ghosts and smears all the time unless natively rendered, making it useless as a feature. If I switch to 1080px, the game is so blurry and undetailed it looks like vision loss. It's impossible to play.

This game wasn't made for 2025 (let alone 2024) systems, nor the future (made obvious to the lacking settings). This game was just not optimised, and it is sad. I want to play the SH2 story, but I can't. It just feels like another Nvidia showcase for the 'future'.

This game is held down by bad development, which sucks. I'll likely be able to recommend this in 8 years when $1000 AUD GPUs can actually run the game without ridiculous compromises.

Maybe in 8 years I can easily recommend this. Even though this was released in 2022, and I am playing with high end hardware (overclocked 4070S included), I still struggle to hit 50FPS at 33% render scaling on a 1080px display.

Yet, the 'minimum' hardware is a 3060? Sure. Don't even bother trying this unless you have the top of the line GPU that isn't even marketed to games anymore. Even then you will be unable to play the game at a native resolution.

For now, this is a blurry, ghosting, and ugly looking game with all the flaws you'd expect from unoptimised garbage. Until I can reasonably buy a GPU that can play this game at native resolution scaling at a good frame rate, I'm not able to recommend this. What a shame.

What a terrible game. It's plagued with so many technical issues that they have proven in previous titles that they can avoid and do better. This game is a ghosting and blurring mess, even at x2 resolution scaling. This game is supposed to be newer? Yet it runs and looks worse than title that came out before it from the same franchise? What a waste of money. Play NFS: Hot Pursuit. Even NFS 2015 was better.

Summary:
It's a disgustingly poor PC port for a console game, that has been neglected.

The Pros:
- Wow, this game has to be the only game I have ever played that has exceptional TAA with no issues. This is a rarity that hardly happens nowadays, and I willingly want to use it.
- Exceptional story and gameplay. It's practically unmatched to this day in 2025.
- One of a kind experience.

The Cons:
- It's abandoned. Rockstar doesn't care.
- The technical issues. If you don't have technical prowess, you will struggle to play the game.

The Inexcusable Con:
There has been a known issue since PC release called 'ERR_GFX_STATE' related with the cache pipeline, which happens with both Vulkan and DX12. It still happens in 2025, and many people are posting about in 2025. It makes the game unplayable at times, and you lose to progress.

For me, DX12 causes the issue after about 15 minutes, and Vulkan has it happen after 6 hours (enough to void the refund chance). This is inexcusable, and a classic from Rockstar. Screw the PC players, right? 😕 The only solution Rockstar has offered is to use the launch command '-ignorepipelinecache', which 4 months ago, according to someone in a forum site, had 463 people finding the article helpful out of 10578, with few people actually saying this helped.

As of typing this review.., Rockstar has actually deleted this page, and the link now redirects you to a general support page. This lack of willingness to help customers of this game is inexcusable, and the only "solution" has been to use an automated script that deletes the pipeline cache the moment it nears 50MB in file size, which causes the game to crash with the 'ERR_GFX_STATE' error.

Afterthought:
It sucks that I have to negatively review this game because of a day zero bug they've refused to fix properly. Heed this review as a warning. If you get the error, refund the game ASAP!!

Early Access Review
I logon to the platform and do/discover the following:
  • Age verification is a thing. Nice! It prompts me to register to the VRChat website to continue.
  • Upon being tricked into doing that, it demands I pay them money to verify my age. Bruh.
  • Pick an avatar, and open the server list.
  • Many sexually suggestive games, with one being listed as "R-15", but at the same time the thumbnail shows softcore porn, with the genres explicitly stating that it contains adult content/themes. Nothing is stopping these people from hosting these worlds without restrictions?
  • Attempt to report it, but I am informed after I make my report I am not allowed to make my report (likely for being a new user).
  • I join a public server.
  • Instantly hear the most vile and racist comments being made by seemingly grown adults.
  • People are attempting to indoctrinate radical views on others, especially if they deem you as being 'not black'.
  • Almost all the outfits are extremely sexual in nature, with a lot of these users being verified 18+ users, or seemingly minors.
  • People openly discussing sexual topics, which I then hear a literal kid start discussing with them, and the adults allow it??
  • All these verified 18+ users actively join the public all ages servers and discuss adult topics.

Final verdict:
Look, I knew ever since this game released it fell into deviant disarray when the fad died out, but I thought that with all the time that had passed, I really would've thought that VRChat would have done something about the community they are allowing to exist here. Every server I would join was seemingly like this, and when I did finally find someone cool, it was nice, but so rare. This place is not safe for kids, and I am in awe that kids are allowed here. Play at your own risk. This community is a cancer exclusively because the people who can fix it will not.

I really wanted to like this, but I couldn't justify the constant 500MB of memory being used up and 1-10% CPU utilisation (frequently around 6%) on my 5900XT even on the lowest settings when my entire system uses below 10% when watching YouTube on a Chromium browser and running Discord in the background without hardware acceleration enabled.

I attempted to minimise the utilisation by thread locking it, but this didn't work, and setting it to use a single thread actually locked up my PC and forced me to reboot as I was unable to even access the sign-out page through CTRL+ALT+DELETE. I also just wasn't satisfied with the lacklustre anti-aliasing that was provided.

I'll come back to this another time and see if they resolve these issues, and then maybe I'll consider shilling a hefty $30 AUD on the Hatsune Miku DLC. For now I regrettably can't recommend it.

Incredibly useful. It's worth figuring out how to disable the ring on start up and Steam status to enjoy the most from this. Super close and borderless windowed are my favourites.

Just completed 100% of the story and I am unimpressed overall.

Here is what I was impressed by:
- The visuals.
- The story.
- TAA (temporal anti-aliasing was not forced).

Here is what I was not impressed by:
- A known bug in ultra-wide screens still existing in story mode which adds black bars.
- Encoded black bars in the cutscenes, wasting bitrate and further adding black bars to ultra-wide screens.
- Multiplayer is COMPLETELY dead.
- Story is short.
- Selling a full-price DLC character that is free if you beat the short story campaign.

Overall:
- DO NOT buy this if you want to play multiplayer, no one is playing.
- DO NOT buy the ultimate edition, no one is playing.
- DO NOT buy the game at full price, no one is playing.
- DO buy the game at discount if you want a pretty good Batman/Superman story (play the first game first).
- DO NOT buy the game if you hate black bars and own an ultrawide, this issue was reported as early as release and still hasn't been addressed.

Literally the best borderless fullscreen tool I've ever used. I just wish I didn't need to use Simplode Suite to use it.
