Marcus you sonnuvabitch, you made a good pair with Kaelith . We could've ruled together after the rebellion , you could've gotten married with her, have a normal life , go to work every morning , give some love to your red haired wife in the afternoon and have tons of red haired babies . But noooooo, you just had to stand up to your principles and now you rot with it.

Why would you have a cartoon-ish looking Christmas tree that plays seasonal music in the middle of a rain forest? And arrows made of currency that points to the next screen? And lemon grass bed as a save point? What is the explanation behind all these out of place phenomenons? Can't it be something that are better explained by the story setting and fits into the universe?

Combat is fluid and the mechanics are solid but these kind of pet peeves just take the immersion away from the game. This is a promising Indie game and I hope nothing but the best for this studio moving forward but this game is just not for me.

I was looking for a game to scratch that Castlevania itch. This one isn't it. The game simply doesn't interest me enough to make it enjoyable.

I sincerely hope for the best for the devs but this one ain't doing it for me.

You can clearly see the potential Obsidian have if they make games that were made to be good and engaging instead of pleasing the m0dErN aUdiEncE. The lore writing and story-telling perfectly reflects the grim narrative of the crisis, story continuity was perfect, class design were great and it has enough content to keep you busy for 80-90 hours.

Interesting at first but not enough hook to keep going after several hours. Felt more like doing a chore than playing a game.

This game is largely inspired by three things: X-Com's combat mechanics, Darkest Dungeon's camping resource management, and SotS rogue-lite runs. Only the first two blend in nicely with the final product.

In X-Com, perma-deaths and stacked campaign (where you're expected to lose/not every campaign will be a victory) kind of works because of randomized recruits, whereas in DD a failed dungeon run may cost you resources at best and complete wipe at worst, but campaign-ending scenarios are rare. In SotS every playthrough feels different due to randomized elements and you're basically forced to play with the hand you're dealt.

To put it simply, the lack of variation in rogue-lite components makes them incompatible with the game design of Shardpunk. They assign you named units with preset tools and capabilities; in all honesty, if you've seen one, you've seen them all. Sure, there is randomness in the missions and level design, but after you finish the campaign, there's little motivation to play it again.

The game design would work better with a set storyline and more chapters, where you could unlock additional upgrades/characters based on mission progressions. Although I personally would want to be able to play the game endlessly and slog out missions for resources, the limited variety and character enhancements aren't compelling enough to make me want to try again.

I would still recommend this game, but try not to expect too much.

Class balance is way off, and due to how horrible the auto-targeting behavior works with controller, there's not much in sense of game play variety.

You can be a hero that uses a sword,
or a mage that uses a sword while occasionally hitting enemies with spells,
or a ranger that uses a sword while occasionally hitting enemies with arrows.

Nevertheless, I still recommend it because it's a lot of fun to play with friends, and it goes on sale pretty frequently which makes it dirt cheap.

Maybe get it on a sale if you're planning to play solo.
Definitely get it on a sale if you have three other people to play with.

It's amazing that a game that looks like a flash game from 2000s ,made by a solo Indie dev, plays better than most triple A games in recent years while charging you less than a quarter of the amount those triple A games do. The Green Guy deserve all the success that's coming his way.

I approve.

Provides the much needed dose of nostalgia. There are parts of the game that screams "indie" and lacks polish, and it's hard not to judge every chapter past chapter 26 as artificial difficulty. Even then, you could tell that the devs poured their heart into this game and treat their fan base in good faith, a rare find in modern day gaming. Definitely looking forward for a sequel.
