INTRO 1
Arena mode is an official Team fortress 2 gamemode. It is played on arena map which are distinguished by have the prefix “arena” in their file names. This mode was introduced into the game on August 19th, 2008 as part of the Heavy Update. It originally launched with 5 official maps.

So what is Arena Mode?

INTRO 2
Arena Mode is a gamemode where players are tasked to either kill the entire enemy team or capture 1 or multiple control points before the enemy does.

ROUND START
Every round players start off in their spawn room unable to walk until a countdown timer finishes and the round begins. In this countdown phase it's possible to freely change class and loadout. Once the countdown concludes spawn room doors open and players can start fighting. Spawn rooms in arena mode aren't safe areas like they are in other gammodes. They don't have resupply cabinets and are freely accessible to enemies after a round begins. On most maps 1 minute after a round starts, control points enable. This granting the players that remain alive an alternative way to win than to kill all the opponents.

ONE LIFE
In arena mode every player only has a single life. Once a player dies they can't respawn until a future round. Arena mode maps usually have sparse or no sources of healing. This combined with single-life gameplay makes healing from items, medics and dispensers very powerful in this mode.

EQUIL TEAMS
Arena mode can only be played with the same amount of players on both teams. If there is an odd number of players on a server the extra player will wait out a round, spectate the game and will rotate in for a new round. They trade places with a random player from the team that lost the previous round.

FIRST BLOOD
In Arena mode every round the first player to kill an enemy receives the first blood buff effect. First blood turns all the player's damage into criticals hits for 5 seconds. When triggered, an announcer voice-line plays telling everyone on the server that a player has received the effect. Players shooting a spy with the deadringer, causing the deadringer to activate and fake the spy's death also trigger first blood.

1-THIRD PLAYER SIZE
In arena mode team sizes are limited to 1-third of max players. On full, or close to full servers a large portion of players rotate between playing rounds and having to wait out rounds and spectate. The number of players allowed to play a round is based on the server's max player limit. This means on a full 24-player sever 8 players will spectate and on a full 32-player server 11 players will spectate. The limit on the amount of players that can play a round is probably due to arena mode's maps generally being smaller than maps for other gamemodes.

BEST OF 3
Arena mode is played in a “best-of-3-rounds format. This means that either the red or blue team have to win 2 out of 3 rounds in order to win a match. At which point teams usually automatically get scrambled.

SETTINGS
Certain aspects of arena mode can be modified or disabled depending on server configurations. For example the first blood crit mechanic, the 1-third player cap and the best-of-3 round structure can all be turned off.

GRAVETALK
Arena mode servers usually utilize the grave-talk server setting and block living players from receiving chat messages from the dead. This is done to prevent the dead players from helping the living players by giving them information on enemy locations and such.

OUTTRO
And that’s basically Arena Mode in a nutshell. A last-man standing team-based deathmatch mode with first-blood crits and an alternate win-condition of capturing 1 or more control points. Thanks for watching. Au revoir.
