Square emoticons are best used for pixelart style mosaics. There are many beautiful square emoticons on Steam, but when you try to stack most of them together, you can see their edges/connections between them. There are also many great emoticons that are stackable horizontally, but this guide is not about them.

It is only about monochromatic square emoticons that connect horizontally, but also vertically and you cannot see any connections between them. You can use them in comments with great results, but cannot fully utilize their possibilities in there, becasue of small gaps between the rows. In comments emoticons "touches" eachother only horizontally.

Profile showcases are where those emoticons can fully shine. You can make large planes of color and will not see any gaps between them, both horizontally and vertically. Just like the picture of this guide, which was made entirely with emoticons, without any editing after.

This is the best white square.
It is shaded on the bottom.
Combines perfectly horizontally, but not so well in vertical direction.

Pattern of two shades of blue.
Stacks almost good.
Can be used as dark blue.

Same situation as above.
Connections are hard to spot.
Can be used as dark red.

ːgoreadː
Not perfectly clean.
Some spots can be seen.
Works fine as beige.

ːdrilltileː
Another green shade could be a fine addition to the palette.
Unfortunately has round corners.
Stacked it looks not that bad.

ːRedWithFlowerː
I know this X can be annoying.
Stacked creates interesting pattern and can be used in that way.
And the color is beautiful.
