Mars is Revolting - Mark VI .08

Description
Mars is Revolting - Mark VI .08 Description

Mars, tired of the yoke of the US and world governments who are six months away, has had enough and has declared independance.

Unknown to them, DARPA has been working on strong AI that *can* kill a human, and has created an Ogre Mark VI in a secret lab facility.

However, as the AI has free will, it has decided to enter the battle on the side of the Mars colonists.

As the NAF player, you must try to take the city of Valhalla away from the colonists, by defeating the Mark VI.

As the Combine player, you must protect your city and starport at all costs, even if it means the destruction of the first artficial intelligence.

Huh. Okay. I'll give the map a try.

In the original Ogre, they weren't really, or at least, not like Bolo's. That was intentional as they were trying to explicitly be different than Mark Laumer's Bolo series. After having said that, this game was an experiment for a book I was writing, to see if a battle like this was plausible.

See: http://www.sjgames.com/ogre/resources/faq.html#16

It's also reminiscent of the Bolo short story about the Mark XX.

Aren't the Ogre's already sentient?

Thanks!

Agreed about the command posts - that would be the idea in this one, if the defenders get one shot in on the city, the city dome is breached and everyone has to huddle inside their (air-tight) building. Much easier to pacify that way.

It was a little weird going with SO many infantry (colonists) so I wasn't sure how to blanance that. My original idea was the 2 ground infantry on their side would start on the lower right, (it's a tie-in to a part of the novel this is background to), but it's a lot more fun to drop 2 heavies there :) In any event, the 2 infantry wouldn't stand much of a chance against the town, even if they had powered armor vs. engineers with big lasers.

Until the Devs can work in the Command Posts for the editor, I will always use mobile howitzers over stationary howitzers, if I have the choice. If we could use the Command Posts in the editor, the Command Posts could be a "carrot on the stick" for enemy forces to rush and destroy. Then the stationary howitzers make sense as defenders of the Command Posts. The mobile howitzers can move if they're alive, so no matter what they can continue to move in the enemy's direction to take them out.

I think it was very balanced. I wanted to take on the defenders side; I got lucky with a few rolls of the dice. I brought the Ogre from the lower eastside near the town hex, then when things started getting hairy, brought it back to the townhex, bringing in the mobile howitzers for protection. I rushed my infantry to the front lines; using them for the attackers targets as I moved the mobile howitzers into position for my defensive hold. As you can see in my screenshots, the Ogre only lost 1 main battery and 1 missle. I still had 1 missle as back up, along with all my secoundary batteries and AP's. At some point, all that was left was a group of 3 enemy infantry that started to try to "Get Out Of Dodge"; thats when I brought out the Ogre, what was left of my mobile howitzers, and 1 group of 3 infantry. The enemy infantry realized they were outnumbered, and rushed the Ogre to end up being destroyed. Much Fun! I totally recommend this senario! Thanks Again for Sharing!

Ah neat, looks like you used a lot of the mobile howitzers and a Mark V. I tried it a few times with the Mark VI, and I think your forces work better.

Thank you! How balanced was it? In the book, I want the poor tank to be basically down to about 1 tread unit, but he so scares the other side they break and run - so, if the attackers win most of the time, it's OK. But, I did try to balance it.
