Case #17: Punch Club

He hides, no surprise.
Find his brother,
clear another,
while resisting staring eyes.

Cadmus' brother, Magnus, should know where he is. I need to break into his club to get anything out of him.

The vents are quite hard to navigate. Pay attention to what leads where.

Author's Notes: So first of all, I've renamed this section to Author's notes because I've been showing more than just my opinion lately.

Ok, so the creation of this level started pretty slow. One of the things that I knew I wanted in was the punches only bonus challenge, but that made development quite difficult. I needed to make sure that the entire level was possible with only punches to fight, but that it was still a challenge if someone was trying to go in guns blazing. Because of this, I had no idea what to do. The first week was spent doing nothing.

Then I started playing Hollow Knight, which is another few days with no progress.

Eventually, I had the idea to start with a challenging level, then "trim" it to make sure the punch challenge was possible. The first stage went just as planned, but then I started making Punch Club itself. First it was part of the original stage, then it was split, but I wasn't happy with the layout. Pretty much, there was a lot of scrambling around until I found something I was happy with.

There's only one secret in this level, and that is the seemingly inaccessible auto grenade launcher.

The initial level has a complicated layout that takes some time getting used to. This is fine.

There are numerous rather arbitrary spawns that I'm not fan of. On the first half, I get the one with Sergeant on the right, but I note that there's a Bouncer one and a Bartender that really seemed out of place to me. This is a minor grievance here but unfortunately I see you double down on this mechanic on the second half where it's becoming blatantly more ludicrous. At least it does prep you up for the ambush that I somehow managed to clear on my first try.

I get the intent of these spawns to create certain sequences by injecting for example melee enemies between you and a Patriarch and so on. However, I also think you could still get the same effect but have more of an "ease" into them. Say, a delay of few seconds and some light or exit sign turning on as an indicator.

I work on it occasionally whenever I have the time. However, those opportunities are few and far between. Usually the best place for me to find some footing is during one of those typical seasonal breaks (particularly summer). I’m very sorry if you enjoy the levels, but I can’t confirm when it’ll be completed, only that it will be eventually. I’m still filled with ideas for the series, so once I pick up the pace again, it’ll only be uphill from there.
