If by making it a harder target you mean turrets shoot it less, you know the "corkscrew" trick for dogfighting where you hold space,w and e so you don't get hit by turrets because they are stupid and can't compute lead well, it only works on interplanetary craft or with lots of up thrusters

@Whitehawk True, it was a pretty poorly-written example on my part. My main point is that these ships aren't really survivable enough to make it worthwhile to go out of your way to ensure that gyroscopes don't pop off. If you can do it without making sacrifices, fantastic, but you shouldn't prioritize it over making your ship a difficult target. Sorry I wasn't clear at first.

Also if your at the point where you don't have enough strong blocks to place them to, then you will probably make an exception to have more like 3 gyroscopes but then again would you need 6 gyroscopes for something that small, I am thinking a small grid

@Tom Foolery you don't place the objects just to put gyroscopes on for small ships lol, you can also do cockpits, hydrogen tanks, large reactors or thrusters, etc and then you don't need to place batteries just for gyroscopes

Btw it's the computer components that the turrets shoot at, also I know about that more surface area= more chance to get hit, but also if that block is damaged, it wouldn't get instantly removed from the game as soon as it gets hit by literally any projectile in the game, unlike armor, you are also supposed to only put two gyroscopes on any block at most (maybe only 1 to be safe) so you don't loose all your turning just from one block being destroyed

Ok I checked again, the Kestrel has two Gyroscopes behind armor attached to the side of the cockpit. The fighter cockpit is a pretty strong block and when the cockpit is destroyed, gyros doesnt matter either. So I think this is pretty good design.

a large battery with a gyroscope on it is more probably to be hit, because the battery is large and has components in it, that will make the turrets fire on it. The armor won't be fired at, only the gyroscope itself will be targeted.
I will have a look though.

I've never had a problem with gyroscopes attached to armor. In my experience, attaching gyros to things such as batteries causes more issues since they are attractive targets for turrets and they're single points of failure that can lead to many gyroscopes coming off at the same time.

I know you said not to put more than two gyroscopes on the same piece of equipment, but it would be impractical to use, for example, three batteries to attach six gyroscopes. In this case, you really don't have enough armor to take any real damage, so you're better off trying to stay small to minimize your chances of being hit in the first place rather than to prevent gyroscopes popping off in the event that you are. Yes, I know this last one was a tangent, sorry.

Iirc refinery, thrusters, jump drive, hydrogen tanks are the strongest blocks. The more components lthe better generally. Volume has no technical correlation to integrity. For small grid you should use batteries and hydrogen tanks, on the TF-180 the gyroscopes that are on the conveyor are okay for small grid but the ones on armor I just rotated on the one that my friend made in survival to be attached to be on the battery instead, I recommend to make that an official edit.

So whats stronger than heavy armor by block? A medium cargo container is 3x3x3 so it should be 27 times stronger than a single heavy armor block. Only the Gyroscope is stronger and the lamding gear is stronger than heavy armor, I guess. Maybe Blastdoor parts. In my opinion these are also more viable because these wont be targeted by turrets as they lack computer parts.
