Introduction to the TU-992 Snow Cat
The Snow Cat started life a little over an hour ago as an experiment with 1x1 wheels.
We've all seen hundreds of "tracked" vehicles - tanks & such on the workshop that use 3x3 wheels - and the occasional mechanical thing that uses 1x1 wheels as guides for a rail; but I don't think I've ever seen a ground vehicle driving on 1x1 wheels. Maybe there have been some & I've just missed them or maybe it's simply never been done. Either way I wanted to find out for myself just what was possible; and so here we are.

The Snow Cat is perhaps one of my less useful creations but I figured if it was going to be cool enough to publish then it'd better have some purpose for existing, so I gave it one... a purpose that is... not a filthy innuendo...

To that end, the Snow Cat is a light exploration & remote worksite support vehicle. It carries an Oxygen Tank, an O2/H2 Generator and 2 Small Cargo Containers and is powered entirely by 2 Small Reactors.
In practice, it's good for replenishing suit Oxygen, Hydrogen & power and for filling O2 & H2 bottles. You could leave it near a remote manual dig-site for your crew to top up their reserves or you could carry it on a larger drilling vehicle as an exporation scout.

I've included the usual "Air Intakes" so you don't suffocate in the cockpit on planets with atmosphere.

If you cared to add Artificial Mass blocks, I daresay the Snow Cat might be quite useful on the moon...

Controls
Nothing fancy here. No weird hotkey steering controls - just drive it like you would a normal rover. Up / Down to throttle, Num 0 to brake, Left / Right to steer.

Capabilities
The Snow Cat handles surprisingly well & is quite capable on inclines & awkward terrain, as the screenshots show. It's also very good at climbing sloped blocks - either 1x1x1 or 2x1x1; and it can take a small jump / fall without being damaged.
Like any wheeled vehicle however, there are limits as to where it can go.
Due to having almost no ground clearance, it doesn't like the rough stuff and can easily get grounded on small ridges.
For this reason I recommend keeping it on smooth terrain.

That's it really
Not much more to tell.
Oh... there's a Mk2 version on its way...

Feedback
Comments / questions / suggestions / constructive criticism all very welcome.
I've even been known to do the odd request-build from time to time, so if you have an idea, drop me a line. If I like it I may build it.

Slap a sheet of metal on it and you have a snow plow! (Or drills in SE's case)

Same here until now. This is the first time it's occurred to me to use them as wheels for a vehicle.

I'd be interested to know what the devs originally intended us to use them for. I mean they're cr@p at being wheels & not much better at being bearings...Strikes me they never figured on anyone actually using them for anything.
I'm going to contact them & find out! Maybe I can convince them to give the things some love.

Lol Sleep is overrated ;P Yea..... 1x1 Wheels... I tend to only use them in utility cases

Do you mean ball-hitch or a b(all-h)itch?! Hehe!
What I need is the former - what this build is being is the latter! :steamhappy:

I actually just developed a U/J using vanilla blocks. Can't believe I didn't think of it ages ago! It's pure evil to install but it's ok once it's fitted to something.

These 1x1 wheels though... I think I might hate them! They seem to get stuck on nothing. One tiny imperfection in the voxel & with the trailer on the truck stops instantly. Some of the trailer wheels turn & others dont - then the ones that did work stop working for no reason & others sieze up instead... gnnrrr! :steamfacepalm: I need sleep! :steambored:

I know, right? Sounds like a Ball-hitch would be a decent mod idea to throw at our modder-buddies XD You might use Splitsie's designs for inspiration?

@critproof... thanks bud!
Yep, that's what the mk2 is modeled after. All I have to do now is get it to work properly!
The rotor hitch is causing all sorts of weirdness. If only there was a U/J block!

Neato! And the MkII reminds me of IRL Scandinavian APCs/Arctic transports :)

@ThIF.47... Greetings from the opposite end of the UK!
Thanks for the link. I've subbed & will be checking that out soon.
From the screenshots, I think some of my existing builds will probably get their arses tanned raw by that planet... but it'll be a perfect place to develop more capable ones in the future. :steamhappy:
