Description
French and German cultures improved

Version 1.3.1

Attempts to improve the cultural setup in central Europe.

Adds a clear distinction between the Latin and Germanic cultures within the Frankish Empire.

This mod is currently meant to be used for the 769 scenario, it might have effects on the other scenarios which were neither intended or tested.

Needs the Charlemagne DLC.

Details:
- the French culture now exists from the beginning of the game, they represent the Latin-language peoples, including the originally frankish rulers that were assimilated into the latin culture
- the Frankish culture is now used exclusively for germanic-speaking peoples of the Frankish Empire, i.e. the original germanic-speaking Franks.
- the Frankish culture will convert to German culture, this will represent the introduction of the term "Diutisk/German" for the germanic-speaking Franks inside the empire around 800.
- new cultures "Alemanni", "Bavarian" - germanic cultures that will convert to German culture if their top ruler is German. This will represent the extension of the term "Diutisk/German" onto other germanic peoples under frankish rulership, in the period between 800 and 1000.
- events that create the culture "Dutch" were removed, historically these peoples considered themselves just as "Diutisk" as all the other germans, the Dutch ethnogenesis happened after their split from the HRE, after Charles V stepped down in 1558
- all culture shift events are bound to the culture shift game setting (Faster melting pots)
- kingdom "Frisia" renamed to "Low Francia", the frisians were (are to this day) coast dwellers who were less likely to form a kingdom than their low franconian neighbors
- changed de-jure borders - Low Francia is roughly the modern Netherlands, the flemish region of Belgium and Luxemburg, i.e. the region where low franconian languages are spoken to this day
- De-jure Empire of Germany now includes the Kingdom of Low Francia (Frisia) and represents the germanic-speaking areas of mainland Europe
- local rulers in Neustria / West Francia start as French-cultured people, while the Karolingian brothers stayed frankish, to add some historically authentic spice to the relations between a germanic ruler and latin vassals
- Minor de-jure changes on the Alsace-Lotharingian border

Constructive feedback and suggestions are welcome!

Re: Gallo-Roman Culture:

This was exactly what I have found in my research and exactly what I intended. In terms of this mod, French IS Gallo-Roman. I was essentially too lazy to create a new Gallo-Roman culture and recycled the already existing French culture, because the shoe fits like none other.

Thanks for the compliment, I am very honored.

And a very interesting little history lesson. And good ideas.

I built this mod quite a while ago and have since forgotten many details, historical details, how this mod works, and how the game CK2 works. As far as I remember, this particular mod was somewhat complicated and required thorough understanding how the CK2 cultures work. It would require quite some time investment to get to a point where I can expand the mod, and more time on top of that to implement it.

I make no claims to the code though, anyone who is interested can take this mod and change and expand it.

As for the Suebi, they can be reused for the culture of the Alemanni, the Bavarians and the Thuringians. These three Germanic kingdoms were West Germanic or Central Germanic as the game calls them, from the branch of the Herminones, their language and culture were related, they called themselves "Suebi" or "Suevians", hence the names of the " Duchy of Swabia" "Schwaben" and "Switzerland".
Of course, this in-game would result in the Suebi having German portraits and their culture becoming Germanic over time.

The Burgundians were, like the Visigoths, a Germanic minority that ruled over a Romanized Celtic majority, in this case, Gallo-Romans.

The Visigoths can be used as the culture of the rulers of the Duchy of Burgundy, since this duchy is directly heir to the kingdom of the Burgundians, who were East Germanic like the Goths, so their language and culture are closely related to each other.

As for the Suebi and Visigothic culture, they can be reused as follows:

As for the Catalan culture, it is closely related to the Occitan culture of southern France, however, it began to differentiate when Charlemagne established Frankish rulers in the area, changing the culture of the area.

Ideally, the Castilian and Portuguese cultures already exist on the peninsula. To say that, I base myself on the fact that the medieval Castilian culture is a direct continuation of the Cantabrian culture, that is, Celtiberian, from the area of Asturias, Castilla y León. As for the Portuguese culture, it is very closely related to the Galician culture. In fact, the name "Portugal" derives from the vulgar Latin "Portus Gael" which means "Gallic port", so the counties of Galicia and Portugal should be of Portuguese culture from the beginning of the game.

It seems to me very correct that the French as a Latin culture already exist, since at that time, in the region of France there was a Gallo-Roman culture very similar to the medieval French culture. These Gallo-Romans adopted some elements from the Franks, as well as their name "French". In the game, the existence of the French culture seems perfect to me, since it closely resembles the existence of the Gallo-Roman culture. In this way, it seems prudent to me to extend this concept to the Iberian peninsula. In this peninsula, there was a Romanized Celtiberian culture, which was the majority of the population. The Visigothic culture was not strong enough in the peninsula to make its people speak their language or practice their customs and the Visigothic rulers had already fallen into total disgrace by then, the same thing happens with the Suebi, they were a ruling minority that did not They left a very large mark on the region.

Hello! It is an excellent mod that you created, and as a historian I would like to help you with some scientific data.
